Twenty years following the show's finale, Audible released a sequel series, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, which updated fans on a handful of the characters from the original show, including Spike. The audio series was set 10 years after the events of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer finale and featured Spike encountering a version of Cordelia Chase from an alternate reality where Buffy never existed, and Cordelia was the only Slayer.
Although Sarah Michelle Gellar did not reprise her role as Buffy in the Audible series, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story had no choice but to mention her character. Since Spike was at the center of the new story, the episodes revealed what happened to him and Buffy following the WB show. The final episode of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story saw Spike making the decision to stay in the alternate reality where Cordelia is the only Slayer and Buffy does not exist. The Audible series featured Spike, Clem, Giles, and Indira crossing over to the other universe, and after all was said and done, Spike believed that he was better off there than in his own reality. Spike strived to become the King of Vampires to seemingly stop Drusilla in the alternate reality, which meant that he and Buffy would most likely never get back together. Sadly, it appears as if Buffy and Spike's love story, which began in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is over for good.
