In an interview, Angel. While it would face some challenges, a new Buffy The Vampire Slayer series would likely fare extremely well, playing on the same type of nostalgia that made Stranger Things such a success and updating storylines and themes for the 20202s. However, it the success of a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot would rely on finding the right actor for the central slayer.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was originally the name of a horror-comedy movie from 1992 and, while the movie is now largely forgotten, the TV show which followed afterward still holds a beloved place in pop culture, having originally aired from 1997 to 2003. The series is a quirky genre mashup of horror, comedy, action, and romance, that sees Buffy as the latest in a line of vampire-hunting women known as Slayers. The show revolves around Buffy learning to balance her destiny as a superpowered demon hunter and her desire to just live her life, backed up by her rag-tag group of friends.

While it’s difficult to imagine anyone but Gellar in the iconic role of Buffy herself, a reboot series could be set in the same universe, with a new Slayer and lineup of characters. Much of the charm of Buffy The Vampire Slayer comes down to the Buffy The Vampire Slayer's 144 episodes.

Zendaya in Euphoria.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer isn’t all about comedy though. As a show all about vampires and monsters from hell it also contains plenty of darker elements. Buffy The Vampire Slayer explores some surprisingly deep themes, about the nature of power and responsibility, self-sacrifice, redemption, and messy interpersonal relationships. While Euphoria largely grapples with more adult themes, Zendaya’s role as the main character of Rue gives her plenty of experience to draw on. Rue, a recovering drug addict, spends the story trying to find where she fits in the world. This is particularly the case as she finds herself romantically involved with the vampires she’s supposed to be slaying.

Disney is laying the groundwork for a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot with a new show rumored since 2018, though nothing has officially been confirmed as of yet. If a reboot does go ahead though, it will certainly need a few updates, including to the particular 1990s brand of feminism on which much of the original was built and will also need to tackle the issues surrounding its views of gender essentialism and how the mainstream understanding of gender has changed since the original show was produced. However, the characters and their charisma are the emotional core of the show and that element is key to the show's success, and should absolutely not be changed. A talented and charismatic actor for the main role as Slayer is essential to this, and Zendaya is perfect to hold it all together.
