The international Optimus Prime and his GI design in the Transformers spinoff. Transformers: Generation 1 or G1 refers to the first line of Transformers toys that was sold by Hasbro in the mid-1980s and continued on through to the early '90s. Although the brand has naturally evolved to encom new Autobot and Decepticon designs since then, the original G1 look for characters like Optimus Prime and Bumblebee has always remained a favorite among many die-hard Transformers fans.

As such, those fans were disappointed when director Michael Bay's first live-action Transformers film abandoned the G1 designs in an attempt to make bring the Transformers' G1 look back for this December's prequel/spinoff, Bumblebee.

Bumblebee takes place in 1987 and follows Bee as he carries out a secret mission on earth, under Optimus' orders. Screenwriter Christina Hodson has confirmed that Bumblebee's 1980s setting was chosen to honor the G1 Transformers toyline and cartoon series, in addition to giving the story a timeless coming of age sci-fi/fantasy vibe. The international version of the Bumblebee trailer includes extra footage that further highlights the Autobots' G1 aesthetic, as you can see below.

While this preview is mostly identical to the Decepticon Blitzwing early on in the movie and damages his memory core in the process - something that explains how he ends up confused and hiding in a junkyard as a yellow Volkswagen Beetle, when he first encounters the film's human protagonist, Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld). Much like the U.S. trailer, this international preview ultimately ends on a more light-hearted note by showing Bee trying (and failing spectacularly) to walk around the inside of Charlie's home without damaging anything.

The decision to return Optimus and Bee to their G1 looks here doubles as both a nice tribute to the history of the Transformers franchise and a good way of showing that Bumblebee is taking a fresh approach to the live-action Transformers property. That comes as all the more welcome news after last year's Transformers: The Last Knight left even the most hardcore ers of Bay's Transformers movies mostly under-whelmed and wanting something different. Fortunately, it seems Bumblebee will deliver just that when it arrives this winter.
