Taking A Hard Look At Himself

"Am I Really That Fat?"

There is a very distinct difference between Buzz in the first Toy Story and who he becomes in the second movie. after being exposed to the truth that he is a toy, he has a lot more self-awareness which is especially interesting when he finds an aisle filled with Buzz Lightyear action figures and a toy store.

Instead of falling into an existential crisis, Buzz simply looks at this other version of himself and questions if he really looks that fat. It is a moment that shows Buzz has become a much more grounded character.

Reminding Woody Who He Is

"Somewhere In That Pad Of Stuffing Is A Toy Who Taught Me That Life's Only Worth Living If You're Being Loved By A Kid."

The relationship between Woody and Buzz is very much the heart of the Toy Story movies. Despite their rocky beginnings, they become the best of friends who are always there to help each other, even when the other doesn't want to listen to reason.

In Toy Story 2, Woody begins to see the value in becoming a collector's item and considers leaving Andy. But Buzz uses the same sentiment Woody used on him to help him realize that there is no gift better than being there for his kid, no matter how brief it is.

Correcting Woody

"Excuse Me, I Think The Word You're Searching For Is 'Space Ranger'."

Though it was nice to see Buzz grow into a more rational character over time, his delusional space ranger identity in the first movie was certainly entertaining. And his insistence on this fact plays a big part in his tension with Wood early on.

When Woody refers to him as a toy, Buzz quickly corrects him that he means to call him a "space ranger," never willing to let go of this reality he has for himself. Hilariously, Woody its what he really wants to call Buzz would be inappropriate in front of the younger toys.

Taking Charge

"Prisoners Sleep In Their Cells. Any Prisoner Caught Outside Their Cells Spends The Night In The Box."

Each of the Toy Story movies finds a clever way to let Buzz revisit his more out-of-touch persona. In Toy Story 3, Buzz finds himself caught by Lotso and the other villainous toys and is reset to think he is a space ranger again and that his friends are the enemies.

After capturing the others, Buzz gets to do his prison guard routine, laying out the rules for the new inmates. It is fun seeing this more villainous side of Buzz and the funny way the movie turns into a prison movie parody.

Going To Rescue Woody

"We Have A Friend In Need, And We Will Not Rest Until He's Safe In Andy's Room."

It is not hard to see why Chris Evans was cast as the new version of Buzz as the character shares the same heroic spirit and determination as Captain America. In every situation, he is ready to do whatever he can to help his fellow toys.

After Woody is stolen from Andy's room, Buzz insists they go on a mission to bring him back. Though the others are hesitant that they will be able to pull it off, Buzz gives a heroic speech to rally them together and show the kind of leader he is.

Words Of Encouragement

"Sure, You Will, Rex. In Fact, You're A Better Buzz Than I Am."

Lightyear shows that the legacy of Buzz Lightyear goes far beyond just the toy. In Toy Story 2, it is shown that he is also the star of his own video game which Rex the dinosaur is obsessed with. However, he finds it impossible to get past the game's big boss – the intergalactic villain Emperor Zurg.

Yet as Rex struggles with the game, Buzz is there with some encouraging words of . He even suggests that the cowardly dinosaur makes a better space ranger than he ever was. It is those personal moments that show what a great character Buzz is.

Meeting Woody

"There Seems To Be No Signs Of Intelligent Life Anywhere."

One of the scenes that helped kick off Pixar's impressive history is the scene in which Buzz and Woody first meet on top of Andy's bed. Buzz is a new arrival to the room and he assumes he is on a new planet. He begins giving his report to Star Command back home.

Seeing him take in the strange new world is great fun, including commenting on the bouncy surface of the ground. But his line about seeing no intelligent life before Woody introduces himself is a big laugh.

On A Mission

"To Al's Toy Barn... And Beyond."

Even though he eventually embraces that he is a toy, Buzz seems to have a hard time letting go of his space ranger persona at times. This especially happens when he gets carried away with his own heroics, like when the gang heads out to rescue Woody.

As the brave toys set out to leave Andy's room, Buzz makes this altered declaration of his most famous line. It is a nice reminder that, while he might be a brave and valiant toy, he can still be extremely goofy.

Prepared For Battle

"I've Set My Laser From Stun To Kill."

Buzz may be an intelligent and even strategic thinker at times, but it is endlessly funny seeing him oblivious to the world around him. Despite everything around him telling him otherwise, he is unflappable in his assertion that he is a space ranger on an alien planet.

When Woody and Buzz find themselves in the room of the villainous child Sid, Buzz assures Woody that they will be alright since he has his laser. Woody is not warmed by the idea as he sarcastically suggests "blinking them to death."

Taking Flight

"This Isn't Flying, This Is Falling With Style!"

The friendship between Woody and Buzz is a very heartwarming one. It grows throughout the first movie as they have their conflicts only to sympathize with each other and then grow to like each other. But there is one moment that really cements that friendship.

When trying to catch up to Andy's moving truck, Woody and Buzz ride a rocket into the sky and Buzz then activates his wings. At that moment, the two toys switch perspectives as Woody is amazed that he really is flying but Buzz humbling insists it is "falling with style."
