Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural sees hosts Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej dissect paranormal legend of haunted location and do some investigating of their own as they travel to the locations and try to find ghouls on their own. Although there is usually a good balance of comedy and horror in the show, there are some episodes where the scale is tipped more towards horror.
Although the scarier episodes always have comedy to ease the tension some stories are so terrifying it's difficult to get them out of your head after viewing the episode. And although we're not at the site it's still scary to see Ryan's reactions and know he's feeling true fear. Let's revisit some of the scarier episodes of the series so far.
Updated on December 20th, 2020 by Sam Hutchinson: It's been a while since the Ghoul Boys last investigated some haunted (or not-haunted for the Shaniacs) locations. While fans of Ryan and Shane love the True Crime series, nothing quite compares to seeing Ryan's face when he hears a knock or a whisper. So, in order to keep the Boogaras and the Shaniacs happy and excited for the release of the new Supernatural season this year, this list has been expanded to include even more terrifying episodes of Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural.
The Haunting Of Loey Lane (S6 E5)
While episodes featuring the Ghoul Boys typically see them investigating some of the most famous haunted locations, some of their creepiest investigations feature normal, everyday hauntings. In the case of Loey Lane's horror story, this certainly applies.
While prison blocks and lighthouses are terrifying, the audience doesn't feel creeped out too much because they don't live in a prison block or a lighthouse (probably). Taking the investigation into someone's house makes the story feel more personal. This coupled with the creepy audio recordings Ryan captured made for a terrifying episode.
The Haunted Quarters Of The Dauphine Orleans Hotel (S2 E9)
Haunted hotels are creepy and annoying. The last thing anyone needs when going on holiday or a business trip is a creepy ghost ruining their hotel experience. Ryan and Shane's investigation into the Dauphine Orleans Hotel certainly was eye-opening.
It was in this episode that the boys picked up one of their creepiest audio recordings, and a voice whispering "I'm right there." Furthermore, Ryan also recorded footsteps marching around in the room on top of his own at 4 am, but after asking at the reception he was told that no one slept in that room.
The Haunting Of The Salem Witch Trials (S2 E8)
Ryan presents the timeline and background of the Salem Witch Trials, as well as theories behind the events. The background is interspersed with Ryan and Shane traveling to the historic sites at Salem. They arrive at Salem during a strong snowstorm and they walk around the grounds at night, snow crunching under their feet.
There are a lot of funny moments throughout, but this episode is mainly creepy for all the well-known history and if there are any spirits around the area they can't be happy that they were executed during the trials.
The Chilling Chambers Of Colchester Castle (S3 E9)
The United Kingdom's vast history is perfect for building ghost stories. Some of the UK's oldest buildings are also its most tragic, with areas being known for tragic events that ultimately lead to ghost stories. One of these buildings is Colchester Castle, one of the oldest Castles in the United Kingdom.
The tales that Ryan tells of the castle are scary enough, but the castle is also home to one of the creepiest moments in Buzzfeed Unsolved history. The audio recorder picks up the sound of a woman singing eerily in the distance. If you haven't seen this episode yet, make sure not to watch it alone at night!
The Ghosts and Demons Of Bobby Mackey's (S2 E1)
Shane and Ryan investigate Bobby Mackey's night club, which some think to be a portal to hell. It's Ryan's one demon location concession of the season. The building was part of a mob casino and home for satanic cult rituals. True to form, Shane immediately starts taunting the ghosts of the mobsters, and Ryan is terrified by any little movement and is startled by a disco ball.
Although there is a lot of laughs in this episode, including the iconic line "hey there demons, it's me, ya boi," it is still a terrifying place with a lot of history and legend attached.
The Chilling Exorcism Of Anneliese Michel (S1 E4)
Although Shane and Ryan don't travel to a location on this one it's still terrifying all the same. Ryan retells the case of a young girl who started having epileptic episodes, and after briefly sought help from the medical field, they turned to religion and she had 67 exorcisms before finally dying of starvation.
The subsequent court hearings found the doctor, the priest, and her parents guilty of involuntarily causing her death by not forcing her to take medical help and force-feed her and instead only fed into her delusions by performing countless exorcisms. The terrifying part is the live recordings they played during the trial where you hear her distorted voice and an artist's rendition of how Anneliese looked during her final days.
The Demonic Curse of Annabelle the Doll (S5 E8)
This episode sees Ryan and Shane visit the Warren house to see the famous cursed Annabelle doll from The Conjuring franchise. Although it's typical for Shane to taunt whatever haunting they're investigating, it's especially tense when he faces the famous doll seeing as how those who have taunted it in the past have gotten into fatal crashes on the way home.
Also, it's terrifying to have the virtual tour through the Warren house that holds hundreds of cursed and demonic objects that the two confiscated after their own investigations. It makes you want to research the objects and make sure you can't get cursed through your screen.
The Shadowy Spirits of Rolling Hills Hospital (S4 E2)
Ryan and Shane travel to the legendary haunted hospital and all Ryan can do is laugh when they enter the dilapidated haunted location because of how creepy it is. The centuries-old drafty building is constantly windy giving an eerie sound that travels with them as they continue their tour around the building.
Seeing an artist's rendition of the ghost who is known to scream is bone-chilling and we have to agree with Ryan when he says it's what nightmares are made of. Another apparition said to walk the halls is over 7-feet tall and shadow people are known to crawl at patrons investigating, truly terrifying.
The Haunted Shadows Of The St. Augustine Lighthouse (S6 E2)
Lighthouses are some of the scariest buildings in the world. The structure of the building elicits feelings of claustrophobia due to its tall, slender design, while also drawing feelings of isolation and loneliness due to the perception of a lighthouse keeper's life.
While the pirate talk at the beginning of the episode was hilarious, this hilarity didn't last long. One particularly terrifying moment came during Ryan's isolated walk up the staircase. Ryan received answers on the spirit box, with one reply even asking Ryan why he was leaving.
The Unbelievable Horrors of the Old City Jail (S6 E6)
Although it's normal for Ryan to lose his mind on an investigation, this episode takes it to another level. They visit the haunted Old City Jail said to have countless spirits roam its now dilapidated halls. A lot of the episode is silly when Shane and Ryan are together, but when they investigate on their own Ryan can't handle his terror as he runs and screams throughout the building and the fact that Ryan believes he captured a full-bodied apparition on camera.
It's undeniably the most afraid we've seen Ryan and although it is partly funny seeing him breakdown as Shane laughs outside it's still terrifying and shows how upsetting the location is.
