The series is based on the novel by Richard K. Morgan, and the show seamlessly blends social commentary with the thrilling cyberpunk aesthetic that distinguished Altered Carbon from its competition.

The series follows Echo (Dushku), a woman who signs a contract to be a doll, meaning she's ed with different skills and personalities to be whatever clients of the mysterious company want. It's a dark and interrogative series that only increases in stakes as the plot progresses.

While the show was on the air, Dollhouse was largely overlooked and was negatively compared to Whedon's other work. However, it's fun to revisit Dollhouse today and see how much of a precursor to contemporary projects it was. Unfortunately, when Dollhouse was canceled, it upended the plan and forced the series finale to jump forward in time without giving viewers the chance to get acquainted with the new world order. Though Echo finds a sense of self by the end of Dollhouse​​​​​​, there's too much unresolved and left up to interpretation to be fully satisfying.

Balanced by plenty of humor alongside its otherworldly elements, the series came to an end after season 2.

Anchored by a lead performance by Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld had many great ideas but faced backlash after season 2 didn't deliver on the promise of season 1.

However, this didn't mean that Westworld should've ended on such an open-ended note, as it was abruptly canceled after plans had been laid for season 5. Of all the canceled sci-fi TV shows that ended on cliffhangers, Westworld is particularly upsetting since the series had so many ups and downs throughout its run and worked so hard to come back from its middling second installment. The minds behind The OA, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, crafted one of the best Netflix original series of the past decade, and it's still sorely missed today. The fact that audiences and critics didn't get the closure they deserved after following the OA/Prairie, played by Marling, on her mind-bending adventure, is incredibly disappointing. When the highly anticipated second season premiered in 2019, it seemed as if we were finally going to get the answers that the series had been teasing since season 1. However, The OA took things one step further.

There's no question that The OA isn't for audiences who aren't interested in meta-textual explorations of film and television, as the series gets into the weeds of self-awareness and nuanced storytelling. The finale of The OA saw Prairie on the verge of discovering that in her new reality, Hap (Jason Isaacs) is right there with her. If The OA had been renewed for season 3, there's no telling how much further the writers would've taken the story and how much more shock and awe they had in store for the dedicated fan base.
