Captain Marvel 2 has been retitled The Marvels but by the end of the sequel, the Marvels could be an actual superteam that may be the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of The Ultimates. Brie Larson will return as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel to headline the sequel to her 2019 billion-dollar blockbuster, but she is expected to be ed by other heroes with a claim to the name Marvel, including Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani).
The MCU's Avengers are largely based on Marvel Comics' Ultimate Universe version of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which were called The Ultimates, in the early 2000s. However, in 2015, Marvel created a different version of The Ultimates, which was comprised of Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Spectrum (Monica Rambeau), Miss America Chavez, and Blue Marvel. Their mission statement was to be "the ultimate team to solve the ultimate problems" in the Marvel Universe. Unlike the more reactionary Avengers, the Ultimates were a proactive, spacefaring, and multiversal group that tackled problems before they arose or those that have never been adequately dealt with. The Ultimates' first mission was to solve the problem of the planet eater Galactus. The Ultimates was a truly cosmic team tackling mind-bending cosmic problems.
While it's too early to say what the story of The Marvels will be, the stage has been set for Captain Marvel to return to Earth and meet old friends, such as the grown-up Monica whom Carol Danvers last saw as a pre-teen in 1995, and new heroes like Kamala Khan, who idolizes Captain Marvel and used her as inspiration to become Ms. Marvel. Based upon Monica's tragic loss of her mother, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), in Ms. Marvel series on Disney+ is anyone's guess. But however The Marvels ultimately shakes out, there's a strong possibility they could emerge as a formal team by the end of the film.
Meanwhile, another member of the comic book Ultimates, Miss America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), will have already ed the MCU with her debut in aerospace engineer Monica Rambeau said she knew in WandaVision, but while that wasn't Brashear, Blue Marvel could still make his MCU debut at any point.
That leaves the final member of the Ultimates, Black Panther, but after the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, the MCU promised it will not recast King T'Challa for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. However, Ms. Marvel would be a logical replacement for Black Panther since she has ties to Captain Marvel. ing a cosmic team would entertainingly make Kamala Khan, a teenager from New Jersey, a fish out of water, but if Spider-Man (Tom Holland) has been to space, why not Ms. Marvel? Alternatively, if the Black Panther sequel sees another MCU character take on the mantle as protector of Wakanda, they may still step into the team in T'Challa's place – Wakanda Forever will premiere before The Marvels.
The MCU has the pieces falling into place to assemble the Ultimates under the name of the Marvels, which would make more sense considering how many heroes have a claim to the name "Marvel". With Carol Danvers, the Marvels have the most experienced and cosmically powerful superhero in the MCU leading Monica Rambeau, a member of S.W.O.R.D., the cosmic-powered Miss America Chavez, and Blue Marvel, with Ms. Marvel providing spunk, wit, and a fresh, youthful point of view. With both outer space and the Multiverse becoming bigger factors in the MCU's Phase 4, the Avengers can protect the world but The Marvels could introduce a new team to protect the universe.
