There are several cosmic villains who could serve as the main antagonist of Captain Marvel 2. In her first solo outing, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) had to fight one of Mar-Vell’s old enemies. In the movie, she was thrust into the midst of the Kree-Skrull War, with the assumption being that the shape-shifting Skrulls would take up most of her attention. But, as things often are in the MCU, it turned out that things weren’t what they seemed.
The Skrulls ended up being Carol's allies in Avengers: Endgame, she returned to Earth after a long absence to assist Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the defeat of Thanos (Josh Brolin).
Directed by Nia DaCosta and currently scheduled for a July 2022 release, Captain Marvel 2 is set to send the cosmic-powered heroine on a new adventure in the present day. Thus far, details on sparse on what the plot will entail and what the setting will be. There’s also no official word on which Marvel Comics villain will be chosen to fight Carol Danvers. Considering that she’s one of the MCU’s strongest characters, it will undoubtedly be someone extremely powerful. Here are the candidates for Captain Marvel 2’s villains.
Queen Veranke
There are rumors that Marvel is planning a “Secret Invasion” story in the MCU. If Marvel’s intention isn’t to give it its own movie or Disney+ series, it could be that Marvel will make it the plot of Captain Marvel 2 instead. If so, the villain of the film would likely be the character who orchestrates the Skrulls’ invasion of Earth in the comics. The Skrull responsible for that was the evil Queen Veranke, who used her abilities to masquerade as Spider-Woman for years. In Captain Marvel 2, she could take on the form of a different superhero or a high-ranking government official.
Korvac
Heavily rumored for Captain Marvel 2 is Michael Korvac, a character who is best-ed for a storyline that played out in the pages of The Avengers in the 1970s. Now known as “The Korvac Saga”, the story revolved around a conflict between the Avengers and Korvac, a man who secretly stole cosmic energy from Galactus. After gaining the Power Cosmic, Korvac became one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe and was quickly targeted by Vance Astro’s Guardians of the Galaxy from the future. Korvac and his lover, Karina, came to Earth with the intention of remaking the universe into a better place, but were opposed by what was potentially the most massive gathering of superheroes that had occurred up until the point.
Disgusted that the Avengers and Guardians would be against his ideas, Korvac used his powers to effortless kill nearly everyone in attendance. When Korvac realized that even Karina was beginning to have doubts about his sincerity, he used his powers to revive all the Avengers and committed suicide. Moondragon, who knew that the heroes would feel guilty over causing the death of someone who actually wanted what was best for the world, erased everyone’s memories of the incident. What stands out about the Korvac Saga is that it wasn’t as black-and-white as other superhero stories. Carol Danvers was just one of many Avengers fighting against the character, but Captain Marvel 2’s version of the story could make her the centerpiece, with other characters like Ms. Marvel and the Starjammers possibly ing her in the search for Michael Korvac.
Rogue
Surprisingly, the subject of several rumors surrounding Captain Marvel 2 point to the movie’s villain being Rogue. Though Rogue is known mostly for her ties to the X-Men, she got her start as an enemy of the Avengers and Carol Danvers. At the behest of Mystique, the power-stealing Rogue absorbed Carol’s abilities and memories, and she used them to battle the Avengers. Because of Rogue, Carol lost her identity, and wasn’t the same again even after her memories were restored by Professor X. Profoundly affected by what Rogue had done to her, Carol developed a deep-seated resentment toward that her that resulted in her leaving Earth behind.
Though they share an important connection in the comics that would be interesting to see translated to the big screen, it’s difficult to imagine Rogue working as the main villain of Captain Marvel 2. Since Rogue isn’t evil, any conflict between them shouldn’t last an entire movie. It seems more likely that if the movie did somehow utilize her, she would work better as a secondary antagonist. Her role could also be used to set up a future appearance in an X-Men movie.
Annihilus
In Marvel Comics, Annihilus is the alien ruler of a dimension known as the Negative Zone. In the Silver Age, it was discovered and explored by the Fantastic Four, who were forced to contend with Annihilus. Most of his battles with Marvel’s First Family during this time period resulted from his repeated attempts to escape the Negative Zone. Given how powerful he was, the Fantastic Four knew that outcome couldn’t be allowed. But eventually, he did leave the Negative Zone to become the main antagonist of the Marvel Comics cosmic crossover event, “Annihilation”, which forced a team-up between Silver Surfer, Nova, Super Skrull, and more.
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has expressed interest in Annihilus, but the character only became available to Marvel recently. As a Fantastic Four villain, he wasn’t actually on the table until the Fox-Disney deal was finalized in 2019, which means Marvel is now free to include him in a cosmic movie like Captain Marvel 2.
Moonstone
Karla Sofen was a devious psychologist who acquired a strange crystal that imbued her with super powers. As Moonstone, Karla ed the Masters of Evil and fought with the Avengers on multiple occasions. She became a ruthless villain who was willingly to do whatever it took to get what she wanted, and she concocted various schemes designed to defeat her foes. She even, callously, manipulated and discarded characters like Blackout, who she used as pawns in her plans.
After ing the Thunderbolts and going through a brief period of wanting to reform, Karla returned to her villainous ways and ed the Dark Avengers as the new Ms. Marvel, acting as Carol’s evil counterpart. What followed was a brutal showdown between Karla and the real Ms. Marvel. Moonstone could work well for Captain Marvel 2 if the movie intends to use a villain who can match up physically with its title character.
