As Marvel's Judgment Day event nears, the fate of Earth will be decided as the planet's heroes are tested, and it seems Captain Marvel will be forced to answer to her mother, Mari-Ell. The event will see the X-Men and Eternals go to war with the Avengers caught in the middle, kick-starting some kind of reckoning with the Celestials.
As one of the key of the Avengers, Captain Marvel is destined to be featured as a key focal point in this storyline. However, stopping an intergalactic battle between two of the universe's most powerful teams is going to be the least of her problems. It seems that as Marvel's heroes answer for the actions of their past, Carol Danvers will face a more personal interrogator than most.
According to Captain Marvel and her sister Lauri-Ell will be tasked with proving their worth as heroes when an "unexpected new player emerges." It seems that Mari-Ell will play a pivotal role in the judgment rendered over Carol and, by extension, the planet itself. Captain Marvel #42 hits stores October 12, 2022.
Mari-Ell is in an interesting place in the Marvel canon right now, as the most recent tweaking of Carol Danvers' origin story reveals that she herself is half-Kree on her mother's side. Her mother, Mari-Ell, spent time on Earth as a Kree in hiding. This certainly complicates their relationship, but their mother-daughter dynamic over the years has been largely fleshed out in more recent years, most notably in Margaret Stohl's Life of Captain Marvel run, which depicted the death of Mari-Ell.
The repositioning of Carol Danvers' origin has opened up new stories about the people she's closest to, giving her the opportunity to bond with her sister, an Acc of the Kree Empire. Now, the two will reunite to reckon with the return of the woman who binds them together. How Mari-Ell figures into the larger narrative of Judgment Day is yet to be revealed, but this unique family reunion seems like it will be incredibly consequential, as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance.
For run, Mari-Ell will be very much alive. Whether she winds up being more of an obstacle in Captain Marvel's way or a notable ally by the run's ending, fans will have to wait and see. Carol Danvers is a character very concerned with legacy - taking her Captain Marvel name from dead hero Mar-Vell - so her mother's perspective on her adventures is likely to carry a lot of weight - here's hoping Mari-Ell is on the side of the angels.
