Warning! This article contains spoilers for Captain Marvel #35
As the cosmically villainous Vox Supreme works to put its evil hooks into Captain Marvel once more, Marvel Comics brought about the epic return of Binary as shown in gorgeous cover art. Binary is the ultimate form of Captain Marvel, one of pure energy that brings the cosmic power surging within Carol Danvers to the surface that transformed the hero from the appearance of a normal human to that of a living star. While Captain Marvel has long-since put the days of being Binary behind her, the ultimate form returns in an all-new way in the hero’s latest adventure with that version of Captain Marvel put on full display in amazing cover art.
In Captain Marvel #35 by Kelly Thompson and Sergio Davila, Captain Marvel has just been freed from Vox Supreme’s capture. The cosmic villain is working towards capturing every one of the Marvels and turning them into its personal slaves. In the previous issue, Carol was captured by the villain and tried to use her powers to phase out of the containment. Instead of freeing herself, Carol creates a separate version of herself who looks exactly like Binary, the previous alter ego of the hero, who manifested outside of the containment and wreaked havoc on the facility in which they were held. Now that Captain Marvel is free, she has a new ally of her own creation, Binary incarnate separate from her own consciousness and effectively an all-new hero within Captain Marvel lore.
In a Tweet by Binary in all of her cosmic glory, floating in space with an altered version of the original Binary costume, surging with power and looking directly at the reader. The second cover is more of a colored blue print of the new take on a classic character. Two images of Binary are shown standing in an action pose with her costume on full display on this cover, giving fans a chance to see the front and back of the suit.
This new version of Binary introduced in the current Captain Marvel continuity is a treat for fans of that version of the hero. Binary made her first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #164 which was a fitting series for the hero to reach her ultimate form given the circumstances of how she lost her original powers. In issues prior, Captain Marvel had her powers stolen by Rogue and fell into a coma for some time after the attack. When she awoke, Carol was basically powerless as she was permanently drained of her energy by the mutant assailant. When Carol became Binary in the X-Men title, she tapped into a new cosmic power source entirely her own and let it consume her to the point of becoming a being of pure energy unlike anything she had experienced before.
Carol Danver’s time as Binary was relatively short lived compared to her being Captain Marvel as fans are more familiar with, though that form is arguably her greatest and most powerful. When Carol became Captain Marvel once again, Binary was seemingly gone forever with fans of her redesign left wanting for more. Now, Binary is back and fighting alongside Captain Marvel which is perfect for fans of both iterations of Captain Marvel. With this exciting new development that pays tribute to the epic history of Captain Marvel while also expertly paving the way for a new future, Captain Marvel’s ultimate form returns and is brilliantly shown off in gorgeous Binary cover art.
