Warning! Spoilers for Marvel Comics' Captain Marvel #30 ahead!
The pulse-pounding finale of a post-apocalyptic Marvel timeline ruled by the coming offspring of two Marvel fan favorites, Captain Marvel has been on a mission to prevent this dark future from coming to fruition. Now that Carol has lost the faith of her only hope, the cosmic adventurer is truly back to square one.
Captain Marvel #30 finally brings writer Kelly Thompson (Black Widow, West Coast Avengers) and artist Jacopo Camagni (Strikeforce, Deadpool the Duck)'s "Strange Magic" trilogy to a conclusion, in which Carol Danvers' personalized struggle with the mystic arts comes to a head. Without the aid of Earth's good-natured sorcerers, Carol finds herself turning to a less savory party in the form of devious Asgardian sorceres Amora the Enchantress. Captain Marvel seeks Amora's help in crafting a magical elixir, originating from the underwater region of Atlantis, used for vanquishing a monumental magical threat to mankind. Unbeknownst to Amora, Carol's actions will see that Ove, Amora's future son with Atlantis ruler Namor the Submariner, erased from existence.
The future offspring of the Enchantress and Namor may present a great danger to the Marvel Universe at large, but the actions that Carol Danvers must take in defeating Ove are perhaps even more malicious. While her intentions may seem righteous, Carol has committed the ultimate unforgivable magical deed in having Ove's magical abilities nullified to the point where he no longer presents a great danger to mankind. After suffering a crippling defeat from Enchantress' offspring, a faintly responsive Danvers tricks the devious Ove into drinking the magical elixir created by Amora herself. With Ove presented as being no longer a viable threat, Captain Marvel leaves a vengeful Enchantress with her depowered son.
Carol has temporarily defeated Ove, at the cost of the magical community unequivocally turning their back on the unofficial "boss of space." Though sharing a close relationship for the past few months, Carol's last remaining ally and mentor Doctor Strange himself has turned his back on for the time being. He tells Carol that she has "committed a sin against the magical community." The reluctant Sorcerer Supreme previously sent Danvers' former boyfriend United States lieutenant James Rhodes a.k.a. War Machine as backup to aid Carol in her battle against the combined might of Ove and Amora. Strange's deployment of Rhodey may have been seen as a last source of help, but the good doctor reassures Carol that her place in the magical community will remain one of ostracization.
Not only do Carol's actions affect her relationship with Marvel's sorcerers but likely her romantic relationship with Doctor Strange. There may be time for Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange to patch things up before the Sorcerer Supreme's untimely demise in the "Death of Doctor Strange" storyline, but don't expect Carol's association with the magical community to heal anytime soon.
