As Carol Danvers flies into a daring new era, Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful individuals in Avengers history. But can even she triumph against someone who feeds on the very energy that empowers her?
In solicit information for Alyssa Wong and Jan Bazaldua's Captain Marvel #2, fans get an all-new look at Omen - a dangerous mystic who is specifically targeting the ultra-powerful hero. The new series will see Carol Danvers wearing the Nega-Bands worn by the first Captain Marvel - the Kree warrior Mar-Vell - making her a target for Omen, who is "hungry for the Bands' powers!" Speaking in a Marvel press release, Wong says:
The Omen is a villain with corruptive magic, a mysterious connection to the Negative Zone, and the ability to devour energy. She’s been looking forward to meeting Carol for a hot minute.
Omen Can Consume Captain Marvel's Power
The Negative Zone is an alternate dimension often explored by the Fantastic Four, and ruled over by the insectoid warlord Annihilus. So far, it's unclear how Omen connects to this reality, however Bazaldua's character sketch shows the villain stepping into a portal, suggesting Omen may be able to travel between Marvel's main dimension and the Negative Zone at will. Back when Mar-Vell used the Nega-Bands, they allowed he and human Rick Jones to swap places, with one displaced into the Negative Zone. It therefore makes sense that Omen would be after their energy, especially if her connection to the dimension is unwilling.
Omen's Magic Is Captain Marvel's Weakness
Omen is a double-threat against Captain Marvel, boasting both magic abilities - against which she's uniquely vulnerable - and energy consumption powers. Captain Marvel is a cosmic powerhouse, able to literally harness the power of a sun. However, if Omen feeds on energy, that only makes her a banquet for the villain, who will be able to siphon away Carol's power even as they fight. Recently, Captain Marvel came under censure by Marvel's entire magical world, heroes and villains alike, after stripping the villainous Ove of his mystic potential. While she escaped full punishment after ing a magical test, it's likely that Marvel's mystics will still be reluctant to come to her aid, making Omen even more dangerous.
Compared to her Avengers contemporaries, Captain Marvel has few iconic villains of her own, but Marvel has been slowly and surely building up her rogues' gallery with unique threats. Now, Omen s that roster of evil, as Captain Marvel enters a new era
Captain Marvel #2 is coming from Marvel November 22, following issue #1 on October 25.
