Carol Danvers, the first headlining female superhero coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's film slate, hasn't yet been introduced but we already know she's the franchise's most powerful superhero. In the comics, Danvers operated under the alias "Ms. Marvel" for years before taking up the mantle of Captain Marvel but for the purpose of the MCU, the latter is her title before we even meet her.
And when we do see Brie Larson suit up on the big screen, her version of Carol Danvers will already potentially be the "strongest character" Marvel has ever had on screen, at least, that's the word from Marvel Studios boss and producer Kevin Feige.
In October, Feige said the following, hinting that Danvers already exists as a superpowered hero in the MCU but that we've just not met her yet. That's not a surprise given that all-but-guaranteed reality that Captain Marvel will have a role to play in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War (shooting soon!) before the Captain Marvel solo movie in early 2019.
"With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she’s introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had. It’s important, then, to counterbalance that with someone who feels real. She needs to have a humanity to tap into, and Brie can do that."
Speaking with Variety for their November 22, 2016 issue, Feige was asked about the casting and director search for Captain Marvel where he was asked what makes the character so powerful, and his response referenced the popular collectibles of the '90s.
"If you had the collector cards of the Marvel characters and you could see the power levels, she would be off the charts compared to anyone that we’ve previously introduced in a film."
And on why was Brie Larson the right fit to play the character:
"With Captain Marvel, who has powers that approach a level that we haven’t seen before in our films, you need to counter- balance that by finding somebody who is also very human and very relatable and can get into a groove with the audience, where they’re willing to see her fly through the sun and punch a moon away from a spacecraft. At the same time, we need her to land and have relatable flaws."
In the comics, Captain Marvel can do it all. Thanks to her half-alien Kree physiology and as strange piece of alien tech (in her comic book origin, anyway), Danvers possesses superhuman strength, speed, durability, agility and reflexes to go along with her powers of flight, slight precognition (she can slightly see incoming attacks before they happen), energy absortions and blasts, and healing. Combo all these powers with her experience as a spy, pilot, and military officer and it's easy to see why in her live-action adaptation she'll overpower the rest of the Avengers.
The question remains of how the film will adapter her alien origin tale and costume, and whether or not her solo movie will explore her origin tale after she's introduced in Avengers 3. Share your thoughts and theories in the comments!
