Mike Flanagan is developing a television series adaptation of Dark Tower series adaptation. Carrie is King's first published novel and has received multiple film adaptations in the past, with the most famous being the 1976 version starring Sissy Spacek in the titular role and with John Travolta as Billy Nolan.

According to Deadline, Flanagan's Carrie adaptation will be an eight-episode series made for Amazon. Flanagan and his frequent collaborator, Trevor Macy, will be executive producers on the series, with Macy having worked as a producer on Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck. A writer's room is already being opened for the Carrie series as development continues to swiftly move forward on Flanagan's newest project.

What This Means For Carrie

The Series Already Looks Promising

Following positive reviews for The Life of Chuck and winning the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, Flanagan's success at adapting King's work is set to continue with the Carrie series. A writer's room already being opened up indicates that this series is developing more quickly than Flanagan's Dark Tower series, which has struggled to move forward after being announced in 2022. With Carrie being one novel instead of an entire book series, it is likely more feasible to adapt.

While there have been more Carrie adaptations since the 1976 version, with the most recent one starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore in 2013, none of them have made as strong an impact. As an eight-episode series with the experienced Flanagan at the helm, this version is poised to be the best adaptation since 1976. Carrie is shorter than many of King's novels, but even so, a television series may be the ideal adaptation medium, as it allows more time to fully develop the characters and storylines.

This Is The Best Possible Scenario For Another Carrie Adaptation

Flanagan has excelled at adapting King's work in the past and this is likely to continue with Carrie. Max's recently released Salem's Lot movie proved how the format of a movie can be too limiting when it comes to adapting King's stories. Carrie will have the luxury of taking its time to show the torment Carrie White endures at home and school as the series gradually builds to the iconic scene at the prom and the destructive chaos that ensues afterward. Eight episodes is the perfect length to faithfully adapt the Carrie novel without needlessly overextending the narrative.
