Star Wars fans have their first exciting look at the Disney+ TV series Rogue One prequel. The show will star Diego Luna in the leading role as Cassian Andor, the Rebel spy who helped to steal the plans for the Death Star in the 2016 Star Wars spinoff movie.
A Cassian Andor TV series was first announced in November 2018, and as of Disney Investor Day 2020 it is just a couple of weeks into the start of filming. Andor was created by Zootopia screenwriter Jared Bush, and Rogue One screenwriter Tony Gilroy will serve as showrunner. Disney's Investor Day press release describes Andor as "a tense nail-biting spy thriller," and says that it can be expected to arrive on Disney+ in 2022.
As an ensemble film, Rogue One was only able to touch briefly on Cassian's past rather than delving deep into it. The film made it clear from the start that this is a character capable of darkness and violence, which is to be expected from a Rebel Alliance Intelligence agent who operated during the darkest days of the Galactic Empire's control. Though it's too early in filming to expect a trailer, the sizzle reel for Andor shown during the Disney Investor Day 2020 presentation includes a peek behind the scenes and an exciting look at some of the concept art for the series. Check it out below:
Andor's cast also includes Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller. Genevieve O'Reilly will reprise the role of Rebel leader Mon Mothma, a character whom she first played in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. At this point little is known about the plot of Andor, but Star Wars fans can expect more news and details as production continues.
The Disney+ announcements also included the news that Andor will be one of around 10 Star Wars TV shows coming to the streaming service over the next few years. Other live-action offerings include Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic, which will take place concurrently alongside The Mandalorian, and an Obi-Wan Kenobi series that will see the return of both Ewan McGregor in the titular role and Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. If Andor proves to be a success, there's potential for a crossover with other series set before the events of Rogue One.
