Warning: Spoilers ahead for Castlevania: Nocturne season 2, episode 8.
story of Richter Belmont. While the series is loosely based on a couple of Castlevania games, Nocturne tells a mostly original story that also works as a legacy sequel to the previous Castlevania show.
Castlevania came to an end on Netflix in 2021 after four incredible seasons. Fortunately, that was not the end of the franchise. In 2023, Netflix’s Castlevania franchise resumed with Castlevania: Nocturne, which, despite technically being a sequel, stood on its own and had a new set of characters. Given how the previous Castlevania series ran for five years, it remained to be seen whether the sequel series was also going to run for multiple seasons. However, Castlevania: Nocturne’s future on Netflix is currently unknown.
Castlevania: Nocturne Season 3 Has Not Been Confirmed Yet
Castlevania: Nocturne Was Not Renewed In Advance This Time
As of the writing of this article, Castlevania: Nocturne has yet to be renewed for season 3. In October 2024, series director Samuel Deats offered some updates on the future of the show (via X). Deats explained that now that production on Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 was mostly wrapped, they were going to enter a hiatus because the show had not been renewed for season 3 yet. The director pointed out that, if fans wanted more shows like Castlevania, they should season 2 once it dropped on Netflix.
When it comes to animated shows, it can be good to have a new season greenlight in advance given how long the animation process takes. With Castlevania: Nocturne currently on hiatus waiting for the future of the show to be decided, a potential season 3 would most likely take well more than a year or even two to come out. Castlevania: Nocturne was already expected to get a second season when the first came out, and it took little more than a year for Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 to be released.
Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2's Finale Feels Like An Ending
Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2’s Finale Wraps Up Most Stories
While we don’t know if Castlevania: Nocturne season 3 will happen, season 2’s final episode does feel like an ending. Between Annette reclaiming control over her body and the deaths of both Erzsebet Báthory and Drolta Tzuentes, season 2 had a somewhat happy ending that brought closure to most Castlevania: Nocturne characters. Maria has seemingly come to with what happened to her parents and has mastered her magic, although she continues to conjure dark creatures. Alucard, who laid low for 300 years and distanced himself from Belmonts, is now hopeful about humanity again.
Castlevania (2017-2021) had 32 episodes in total.
Even Edouard, who died and was brought back as a Night Creature in season 1, had a happy ending in season 2. Now fully aware of his existence and having memories of his old self, Edouard is coming home with Annette. Richter had the chance to avenge his mother but decided not to engage in battle with Olrox, who helped them defeat Drolta in the final battle. If Castlevania: Nocturne season 3 does not happen, at least the show will have had a satisfying ending that wrapped up most stories.
What Would Castlevania: Nocturne Season 3’s Story Be?
Castlevania: Nocturne Season 3 Could Still Work
While Castlevania: Nocturne season 2’s finale works as the end of the show, there is definitely room for the story to continue. Now that Richter and Annette are together, season 3 could explore their dynamic as a couple. This would mirror what happened in the original Castlevania series, which saw Trevor and Sypha trying to live a peaceful life as a couple after defeating Dracula in season 2. Although Maria is in a better place at the end of season 2 compared to how it started, she still has inner conflicts that could be explored.

“There Was Good In Him:” Castlevania Just Made Dracula’s Death Even More Heartbreaking 7 Years Later
Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 referenced the previous show’s best episode and made Dracula’s death at the hands of Alucard even more heartbreaking.
Castlevania: Nocturne season 3 could also show more of Alucard and what his next steps will be now that he is more hopeful about humanity. As an immortal who has lived through the events of both shows, Alucard can remain the connective tissue of the franchise, allowing Netflix’s Castlevania universe to explore different periods. Likewise, whenever Richter’s story does come to an end, it would be interesting to have a brand-new series about a different Belmont entirely, either set after the events of Castlevania: Nocturne or working as a prequel.
