Cate Blanchett has been part of various successful movies, but her latest project, Borderlands, avoided. Cate Blanchett is best known for her roles in drama movies like Elizabeth, Blue Jasmine, The Aviator, and Carol, and throughout her career, she has been nominated for various awards, winning two Oscars so far. Blanchett has branched out to various genres through the years, including superhero movies with Thor: Ragnarok and fairy tales with Cinderella.
2024 is seeing Blanchett in a variety of projects, beginning with the sci-fi action comedy Borderlands, directed by Eli Roth. Based on the video game series of the same name, Borderlands starred Blanchett as Lilith, a bounty hunter. Another project of Blanchett this year is the psychological thriller miniseries Disclaimer, written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Disclaimer has been well-received by critics so far, but the same can’t be said for Blanchett’s latest movie: Rumours, which has now broken a horrible and unwanted Rotten Tomatoes record in her career.
Rumours Now Has Cate Blanchett's Worst Audience Score On Rotten Tomatoes
Rumours Has Reached An Unwanted Low Score
Cate Blanchett’s second movie of 2024 is the black comedy Rumours. Written and directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, Rumours is the story of seven world leaders who meet at the G7. However, they get lost in the woods while trying to write a t statement on a global crisis. The leaders encounter a thick fog in the woods and the weirdest, most unexpected threats, such as undead bog bodies and a giant brain, and are forced to navigate the tortured ions between them.
Rumours premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
At the time of writing, Rumours has a certified fresh label on Rotten Tomatoes due to its 80% critics score, but that’s not the reason why it broke a horrible record for Blanchett. Rumours has a terrible audience score of just 20%, a new career low for Blanchett. Before Rumours, the movie with the lowest audience score in her career was Stories of Lost Souls (2004), also starring Keira Knightley. Stories of Lost Souls has a 23% audience score but no critics one, but its record has now been broken.
Cate Blanchett's New Rotten Tomatoes Low Is Even Worse After Borderlands
Borderlands & Rumours Gave Blanchett New Career Lows
Unfortunately, Rumours isn’t Cate Blanchett’s only record-breaking project of 2024, though both were terrible records. Rumours is saved from being on the list of “rotten” Cate Blanchett movies thanks to its high critics' score, but the same can’t be said for Borderlands. Roth’s latest movie wasn’t the critics’ favorite and didn’t connect with general audiences, either, and thanks to its 10% critics' score, it’s Blanchett’s lowest-rated movie to date, though with a 51% audience score. Before Borderlands, Blanchett’s lowest critics' score was 31%, thanks to The Monuments Men.
In a strange yet interesting turn of events, Blanchett’s 2024 movies have set new career lows for her on Rotten Tomatoes but in different categories: Borderlands is the one with the lowest critics' score, while Rumours has the lowest audience score. Rumours could get a thanks to its high critics' score, but Borderlands ended up being rotten with both critics and general audiences.
