Halle Berry jokes about her infamous superhero movie bomb Batman Returns: Why Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman Spinoff Never HappenedNearly 20 years on from Catwoman, the film routinely finds itself topping lists of the worst ever made and the biggest box office bombs. But rather than flee from the flop movie, Berry herself seems to have embraced its reputation as a notorious dud, even allowing herself to joke around about it on Twitter. Recently a fan tweeted about their own childhood love of the movie and later adult puzzlement over its poor reception, leading Berry to leave an adorable and funny quote tweet in response. See the exchange in the space below:

Will Catwoman Ever Get The Solo Movie She Deserves?

Despite its utter failure at the box office, Berry’s Catwoman thankfully did not bury the character for all times. In fact, the Selina Kyle version reappeared on the big-screen just a few years later in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Perhaps more triumphantly, Kyle played a huge and fascinating role in this year’s Matt Reeves Caped Crusader movie The Batman.

Zoë Kravitz’s performance as a complex and interesting Kyle in The Batman indeed has fans wondering if the character might finally get the solo movie she deserves. Certainly the time seems right for someone to build a story around Catwoman that takes advantage of all the character has to offer in of psychological and moral complexity (the same way they always do with Batman). And the right actor seems to be in place after Kravitz’s arresting performance in The Batman.

But while the opportunity now seems to be there for Catwoman to finally get a good solo movie, there are behind-the-scenes factors that could prevent this from happening. The whole DCEU is indeed operating under a cloud of doubt after recent moves by Warner Bros. Discovery, including their controversial scrapping of the planned Batgirl movie. It’s perhaps not safe to make certain generalizations based on that one particular move, but now does not seem like a great time for a solo superhero movie led by a female to be pitched. Perhaps the clouds will clear up later and Catwoman will emerge as a character who is seen to have her own value beyond Batman, but it’s just as possible that cautious elements within WB will deem Selina Kyle too much of a risk and keep her tied to her more proven male counterpart. For now, Berry's Catwoman remains the only time the character has been allowed to venture out on her own on the big screen, and the film is sadly a laughingstock.
