Warning: Spoilers for Catwoman #70!Catwoman has played with many alter egos through the years. From Gotham rogue to Batman's love-interest, from anti-hero to avatar of the cat goddess Bast, Catwoman is a shifting figure who's hard to pin down. But at her core, Selina Kyle is a cat burglar through and through, and the new Catwoman creative team is finally returning her to these roots, with no superpowers, no Batman - and nothing but a good thrilling story.

In Catwoman #70 by Torunn Grønbekk, Fabiana Mascolo, Patricio Delpeche, and Steve Wands, Catwoman - one of Batman's best rogues - is turning back to her criminal ways by dealing with assassins and underground organizations outside of Batman. She is surrounded by a cast of all-too human characters with no superpowers, and she relies on her own criminal skills to survive.

With beats like her disguising herself, showing off her acrobatic skills, as well as solving a harrowing mystery, after only two issues, this run is shaping up to be a genuinely essential Catwoman story.

Catwoman Begins a New Era for DC All In That Takes Her Back to Her Roots

Catwoman #70 Main Cover by Sebastián Fiumara

Comic book cover: Catwoman Selina Kyle looks up at pictures of herself in different disguises.

1940's Batman #1 by Bill Finger and Bob Kane saw the debut of Catwoman, then called "the Cat," and she was only a jewel thief. Thankfully, Catwoman has finally gotten out of Gotham and the larger DC All In initiative. Comparatively, this new Catwoman run is a genre shift into a slow burn thriller, which is much more suited to Catwoman's style.

Selina Kyle is a master of disguise - and as she solves the mystery of her own framing, she might end up being as good a detective as Batman himself.

It's also important to note that Catwoman gets to shine on her own in this new story. With no Gotham and no Batman, Catwoman can truly be her own person, whoever that is, and as a cat burglar, she works best in this obscurity. In this issue, her expertise with infiltration is finally expounded upon beyond her usual bank heist plots. She's one of the Bat-Family's best fighters, but more importantly, Selina Kyle is a master of disguise - and as she solves the mystery of her own framing, she might end up being as good a detective as Batman himself.

Catwoman Is Finding Herself Outside of Batman Thanks to a Brand-New Creative Team

The best thing about this new story arc is that Catwoman has no more superpowers, which was a fantastical veer from her thieving character. As DC continues to grow more fantastic, it seems that Selina Kyle is sticking to her basics of thieving and criminal associations. This creative team's new run is much more down-to-earth, with slick action sequences and a budding mystery to be solved.

DC has just dropped a treat for fans by unveiling the main cover of an Catwoman issue a full month ahead of its usual solicitation release.

This story is Catwoman at her best. She doesn't belong in Batman's fantastical world but in a slow-burn criminal thriller. From her origin in Batman #1, she was a criminal, and Selina Kyle was always destined to return to this underworld. She belongs on this side of the fence, at odds with vigilantes and far from any superhero antics. Catwoman, like her namesake, is elusive as a character, and this run shows her at her best - with all her alter egos on display.
