In 2018, Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy created Champions, a show about a theatrical teen (Michael) meeting his dad (Vince) for the first time. But this comedy didn't make the meet-and-greet emotional and dark. Michael is an openly gay teen who needs a place to stay in New York City so he can attend a school dedicated to the arts.
Michael's flair and sassy one-liners made the show a hilarious knockout. Sadly, however, the series only lasted one season before being canceled. Without a second season, fans are left with some unanswered questions regarding its characters and storylines. Let's take a look at 10 storylines that never got resolved.
Whatever Happened To Ro?
In the fourth episode, we meet Priya's (Michael's mother) brother Ro. What was so shocking about Ro is that we've never heard of him before. It turns out, Michael is very successful in New York City and has connections everywhere. Ro took Michael, Vince, and Matthew to a very expensive restaurant before asking the guys if he can take Michael every other weekend. At that point, why didn't Priya have Michael stay at Ro's?
We soon learn, of course, that Ro has a major drug problem and was using Michael, but whatever happened to Ro after this episode? We never saw or heard from him again. It's as if he disappeared and we were never supposed to meet him.
Does Ruby Still Work At Lumps?
In the episode "Lumps," Champions' personal trainer Ruby decides to go undercover at a neighboring women's only gym named Lumps. Champions (Vince's gym) was losing its female customers and wanted to see what Lumps was offering that Champions wasn't.
Lumps' appeal worked on Ruby and she became a personal trainer for the gym. But by the end of the episode, we see her back at Champions ready to work. Personal trainers have a fluctuating schedule, so did Ruby keep her role at Lumps on top of working at Champions? She made a tutorial video and everything!
Did The Guys Ever Reschedule Their Camping Trip?
When Vince and Matthew plan their annual camping trip, they're excited to bring Michael along. The only problem is Michael isn't too sure about the whole camping thing. Vince encourages Michael to bring a friend for the weekend but there was only one problem: Michael didn't have friends. He sets himself on a friend conquest but his choice in friends wasn't good enough for Vince. Michael became so embarrassed by his dad that the camping trip was canceled. But in the opening credits, we see the three men eating in a tent... Did they go end up going, but the scene was cut?
What Ends Up Happening With Priya And Vince?
Whatever happened to Priya and Vince? These two were hot and heavy enough in high school to have a baby out of wedlock, but was it their continued educations that broke them up?
(Side note: it was very troubling that not even Matthew knew about Michael. He's Vince's best friend, brother, and roommate. How did he not know?)
Regardless, Priya tried to turn up the heat with Vince before telling him her plan of taking Michael back to Cleveland but it failed. Nevertheless, these two had some serious chemistry. Would they ever rekindle their romance?
Does Michael Ever Meet His Grandma?
In the sixth episode, Vince and Matthew are gearing up to see their mother. Michael was doing a school project and wanted to learn more about his grandparents since he never met them. While Vince and Matthew have nothing but nice things to say about their dad, they have nothing sweet to say about their mother. She was never present in their lives and Vince has a bad relationship with her (Matthew is too sweet to be mean to anyone).
After a bad lunch date, she decides it's time to meet her grandson and make nice with her sons. But on the day they're supposed to meet, she bails. Does Michael ever finally meet the one they call Gayle?
How Did Dana Resolve Her Breakup With Asher?
Dana is Champions' ant. She's seen as the "nerdy" one who doesn't know how to have fun because she's too busy making sure the gym stays afloat. Throughout the season, we learn Dana has a serious boyfriend named Asher who seems like the worst kind of human. The pair had been together for 12 years and Dana has been ing him for far too long, getting nothing in return. But in "Nepotism," Vince and Matthew find out Asher is cheating on Dana. The men told Dana as a courtesy but that was the last we heard of him. Did she kick him out? Did he defend himself? We needed to know more!
And Do Vince And Dana Hookup?
The funny thing about Dana is that even though she was with Asher for 12 years, she has some serious chemistry with both bosses, Vince and Matthew. She seems most in-tune with Matthew (because of his sweetness) but she's closer to Vince because of their knowledge of business. On the night of Michael's show, it appears Dana and Vince have some serious butterflies going on and it's suggested she had a crush on him. These two would be a solid couple but we never find out what happens between them!
Will Vince Ever Be Satisified With His Career?
Throughout the series, fans learn that Vince was a great baseball player but had to end his career early after several injuries and an incident at a gas station. However, his love for the game never stopped. This is seen when he's offered a new position with a baseball team down south, which he ended up taking, before backing out to be with Michael. Even in the opening episode, Vince is ready to sell the gym and start a new life in Florida.
If Vince hated Brooklyn that much and was looking for a change every couple of weeks, won't he continue on that path?
How Long Will Vince And Matthew Stay Celibate?
Thanks to a school assignment about mornings, Michael tells his teacher that his dad has many overnight conquests whom he sees sneaking out early in the morning. With so many women filtering in and out of the house, Vince and Matthew realized they weren't being great role models. The two decided to be celibate in order to focus on Michael and be the parents he deserved. But the question is, how long did this last? It seems impossible for Vince to say no to a woman and if he starts hooking up with Dana, would that make things weird at home and at work?
Does Michael Get Better at Math?
In the third episode, Michael is having problems with math. Vince decides to hire Dana as Michael's math tutor but Michael would do anything to not have the focus on numbers. He starts asking Dana more personal questions about her relationship to make the time go by, thus not learning much. Dana tries teaching Vince (so he can teach Michael) but that was also a bust. Does Michael fail math or does he continue to see Dana in hopes of actually learning something?
