Tim Burton has a very distinguishable style. His characters and aesthetic revolve around the angular, unique, eccentric, and whimsical. Within the Tim Burton realm, viewers often find small similarities and chalk it up to a connected universe - one winding, convoluted, complicated storyline.
There is no doubt that many characters share a physical resemblance and whether this is simply a coincidence or it's all one grand plan, viewers can't deny the parallels.
Edgar & Igor
Edgar from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) look strikingly similar. Even though Edgar is a young living boy and Igor is Dr. Finkelstein's assistant and possible experiment, they share some similar features.
The eyes, which take up most of the face, the upturned nose, a hunched back, and long fingers. They both have a wide mouth and although Igor has more than three teeth, his facial expressions favor three teeth akin to Edgar's.
Victor Frankenstein & Victor Van Dort
A young Victor Frankenstein and an older but still rather youthful Victor Van Dort have been at the center of many Tim Burton film theories. Their age difference and canine companions have convinced fans that they are the same person.
This is partly due to their obvious resemblance. There's the thick black hair parted with a voluminous side sweep, the large round eyes and small pupils, the angular jawline and narrow pointed chin, and the spindly physique.
Mr. Burgermeister & Finis Everglot
Finis Everglot and Mr. Burgermeister are both fairly grumpy and unlikeable personalities, but what really catches viewers' eyes is how alike they look.
Their mouths are both slanted downward in a line of thin lips, the tiny ears are set far behind their round heads, they both lack a neck, and their deep-set eyes are hidden beneath their pronounced brows. Then there are their noses, which differ in shape but are both small in comparison to their other features.
Elsa Van Helsing & Lydia Deetz
If Lydia Deetz was a character in a stop-motion animation film, her physical features would pair her with Elsa Van Helsing. They both have dark features with long black stringy hair and a fringe, dark eyebrows and eyes, and dark clothing.
Their facial features both include rather small noses, narrow chins, and small pursed mouths.
Vincent Price & Max Shreck
This resemblance isn't as obvious, but as small features come into focus, there is something unmistakable when comparing Vincent Price from Vincent (1982) and Max Shreck from Batman Returns (1992). They both have angular faces, high cheekbones, the same nose shape, unkempt eyebrows, high coarse hair, and the creased wild eyes of madness.
The Cat In Vincent & The Cat In Frankenweenie
In Tim Burton's 1982 stop-motion short, Vincent, there is a black cat. It opens the film by coming into frame and sitting in front of the brick wall. It proceeds to climb that wall and walk across it, leaping off and entering a room, introducing the audience to the main character.
The cat is black and wiry with thin limbs, a long tail, and a distinctly shaped face. The cat that scares Frankenweenie's Victor in the New Holland Pet Cemetary by leaping on a gravestone appears to be quite similar in design.
Vincent Price's Wife & Sally
This similarity can mainly be found in the two characters' faces, how they are built, and the fact that both of them have patterns on their clothing.
Both Vincent's wife and Sally also both have long necks, round faces, big eyes, heavy creases, pointed nose tips, and thin arms, not to mention they are both dead. Sally wears a mix of clothing in various patterns and colors and Vincent's wife is wearing a bold striped dress.
Weird Girl & Kim Boggs
In looks alone, Weird Girl from Frankenweenie (2012) and Kim Boggs from Edward Scissorhands (1990) share quite the resemblance.
Weird Girl and Kim sport a likeness in their long straight fair hair and blunt fringe, large eyes, and delicate features. The two characters also share physical characteristics with Emma Bloom from Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016).
Zero & Abercrombie
In another Vincent and The Nightmare Before Christmas pairing, resemblance finds itself in two dogs: Abercrombie and Zero. Abercrombie was the pet of Vincent Price/Malloy who was experimented on in the attempt to turn him into a zombie. Zero is Jack Skellington's ghost-dog companion.
Both have very long, pronounced snouts, small heads, and long floppy ears. It could even be said that Scraps from Corpse Bride (2005) has a similar appearance.
Ichabod Crane & Victor Van Dort
It's no secret that Johnny Depp appears in a lot of Tim Burton films, whether in character or as a voice. Victor Van Dort is voiced by Depp and also just happens to look like him.
Really, any character of Johnny's within the Tim Burton universe could look similar to Victor, but it is Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow (1999) who stands out as Victor's human counterpart.
