SPOILERS for Chicago Med, season 10, episode 20, "The Invisible Hand."

Caitlin Lenox is one of Chicago Med’s cast haven’t always been the luckiest when it comes to love. They fall in love at the wrong time or with the wrong people and often break up, sometimes breaking up with the same person more than once. The main exceptions are those in which someone dies before their relationship can crumble.

That’s certainly been the case in Chicago Med season 10 finale.

Hayes & Lenox Seemed Like The Perfect Pairing In Chicago Med (Until They Aren’t)

She Learned About His True Self In A Terrible Way

Sarah Ramos as Caitlin Lenox and Brendan Hines as Nicholas Hayes in Chicago Med

If there’s one thing NBC’s top-rated drama Chicago Med knows how to do well, it’s how to deliver a twist. Lenox and Hayes have been building toward a relationship since Hayes first appeared less than halfway through the season in season 10, episode 10, “Broken Hearts.” Caitlin initially resisted the obvious sparks between them. But by season 10, episode 20, she’s preparing for the two to embark on a trip to Myrtle Beach together. It’s a promising romantic future for Caitlin, right up until she learns the truth.

Chicago Med Season 10 Pits Lenox Against A New Nemesis That Could Threaten Her Time At Gaffney

Dr. Lenox has been an antagonizing figure in Chicago Med. After her feud with Archer, she is now at odds with Maggie, causing her job to be in doubt.

Earlier in the episode, Hayes gave Lenox a private surgical training, during which he gently guided her arms. When his hand moved down to her waist, they shared a ionate kiss. But then Caitlin learns from Naomi that Hayes harassed her by using the exact same move when she started her cardiothoracic residency. Lenox had been chastising Naomi for multiple no-shows when she was supposed to scrub in with Hayes, but now she knows why. The episode ends with Hayes texting Lenox from outside as she finishes packing for Myrtle Beach, but she ultimately throws her phone down in distress.

Chicago Med Season 10 Has Had A Lot Of Problematic Pairings

Gaffney Seems To Have A Rule Against Happy Staff

It’s hard to think of problematic romance on the show without immediately thinking of Hannah Asher’s Chicago Med relationships. Asher and Ripley have had ups and downs, but things hit their lowest when Ripley started drowning himself in alcohol after Sully’s death and became a miserable boyfriend in the process. They’ve since made amends, but it doesn’t look like they’ll get back together. And Dean Archer seems to have some interest in Hannah, but he’s still such an aggressive personality at times that Asher might be better off just dating outside of Gaffney.

ScreenRant interviews star Steven Weber about Archer's letter of resignation and his relationship with Asher in Chicago Med season 10.

But Asher’s far from holding a monopoly on ill-advised relationships. In season 10 alone, Charles lied to protect Jackie while knowing she had feelings for him, and Lynne nearly hooked up with Ripley over nothing more than mutual grief. But Chicago Med’s John Frost and Ainsley Towne storyline takes the cake. Ainsley played John’s mother on TV and used their relationship to groom him while he was still underage, then finds him at Gaffney to stir up his trauma all over again. Maggie also had a breakup, but it was borderline painless compared to the above examples.

Chicago Med Needs To Have At Least 1 Stable & Healthy Relationship

There Aren’t Many Contenders At The Moment

S. Epatha Merkerson as Sharon Goodwin and John Earl Jelks as Dennis Washington in Chicago Med

Out of everyone in the main cast, the only one with something resembling a stable relationship is Sharon Goodwin. When she hasn’t been busy dealing with Chicago Med’s nurses’ strike, Goodwin’s been exploring her relationship with Dennis Washington and meeting his daughter for the first time. However, this also led to a dispute between them about the future of their relationship, so it’s far too early to tell if things will truly stay healthy for long.

Sharon's Chicago Med Season 10, Episode 19 Romance Issue Is A Disservice To Her Character Arc

Chicago Med season 10, episode 19 gave Sharon a meaty romantic story, but her conflict with Dennis also did a disservice to her character arc.

The unfortunate part about this uncertainty is that it’s not as common an issue for the other One Chicago shows, each of which has at least one healthy relationship. Chicago Fire has Kidd and Severide. Chicago PD has Ruzek and Burgess. Between both shows, they have Mouch and Trudy. By that math, Chicago Med only needs one and a half healthy relationships to hit quota. Fortunately, with all three One Chicago shows renewed, the series has at least another season to deliver.
