Gehlfuss recently departed from Chicago Med after eight seasons, having reached a natural ending point with his character.

However, during an interview with Variety, the actor revealed that he would be open to revisiting the series in future episodes. Read Gehlfuss' comments regarding the possibility of returning to Chicago Med below:

"We were all in agreement on that, thankfully, as I talked with Dick and the writers. Whenever it makes sense again for important moments, I’d love to don the white lab coat once again."

How Gehlfuss' Character Can Return To Chicago Med

Halstead, Manning, and Owen walk together in the Chicago Med season 8 finale.

Will Halstead became a favorite character due to his knowledge and kind personality, and his development was closely followed throughout the series. In the Chicago Med season 8 finale titled, "Does One Door Close and Another Open?," Gehlfuss' character attempted to deal with the concerning errors surrounding O.R. 2.0, deciding that it was not equipped to be used by other facilities and interfering with a procedure to make his case. He later handed Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) his letter of resignation and said goodbye to the other medical staff before reuniting with Natalie and her son Owen in Seattle.

Based on Gehlfuss' comments, it seems likely that his character will return to Chicago Med somewhere down the line. The series has already featured moments and crossover episodes within the franchise, so it is worth wondering what kind of event at Gaffney would bring him back. Several other Chicago One characters have returned after exiting their roles, including Chicago Med's April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta), which makes a future Will appearance even more probable.

There is potential for his storyline to continue, especially with that move to Seattle and the warnings about O.R. 2.0. Will's romance with Natalie has been a big part of his arc, so the two could come back to Gaffney together. Since he cared about his job and the rest of the ED was ive of him leaving, it will be interesting to see how long it takes before an actual return to Chicago Med happens.
