Chicago P.D. was the first successful spinoff of the One Chicago franchise, and the police procedural has been renewed for season 13. Created by TV maven Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead, Chicago P.D. follows the officers of the police department's Intelligence Unit as they use their unique set of skills to crack some of the toughest cases that the city has to offer week after week. Across its decade-plus on the air, the series has expanded to not only tackle case-of-the-week stories, but also weave interesting narratives about the characters' lives as well.

The 2023 Hollywood strikes put a damper on NBC's fall slate and caused the entire One Chicago franchise to premiere midseason in early 2024. That did nothing to diminish the franchise's popularity, and Chicago P.D.'s truncated season 11 quickly earned the series a 12th season renewal. Despite a promised return to normal on the schedule, several major cast changes impacted the trajectory of season 12, including the departure of fan-favorite character Hailey Upton (played by Tracy Spiridakos). Despite that, the renewal of Chicago P.D. for season 13 was an easy decision for NBC.

Shawn Hatosy's Deputy Chief Charlie Reid was the primary antagonist of season 12, but Hatosy will not be returning as a main cast member in season 13. Voight arranged to have Reid killed at the end of season 12 to protect the Intelligence team, opening the door for a new actor to the show in the same position.

More Exciting Cases Are Expected

Predicting the story of Chicago P.D. season 13 is difficult at this juncture because of the show's case-of-the-week format. Chicago P.D. is very much a procedural series that relies heavily on those weekly case stories that don't carry over into later episodes. Because of this, the only thing that can truly be predicted about the next season is that Voight and his team will be faced with a myriad of challenges as they try to keep Chicago safe.

Some of those challenges are sure to be a direct result of the season 12 finale of the series. One thread in particular set up there will have some lasting ramifications for season 13. Voight makes the decision to arrange for the murder of Shawn Hatosy's Reid in the season 12 finale. With that character gone, there is a leadership position within the police department that needs to be filled, but there is also the issue of just how long Voight can get away with his involvement in the man's death. That is sure to be a thread throughout Chicago P.D. season 13.
