The classic RPG Chrono Trigger turns 30 this year, and Square Enix plans to celebrate the beloved game throughout the year. The time-bending title was originally released on March 11, 1995 for the SNES system, and is considered to this day by many to be one of the best games of all time. Developer Square Enix plans to commemorate the iconic game with several "projects" in the year, to thank fans for their dedication and love over the years since the game's initial release an impressive 30 years ago.
In an X post on the official Square Enix X , the company shares a glimpse into their plans for the game's birthday year. According to the announcement, the celebration involves projects that aren't confined to the medium of video games. Translated from the original Japanese, the post reads:
Today marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger's release in 1995. This timeless masterpiece that transcends time and is still talked about today was born from a dream project by Yuji Horii of Dragon Quest, Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball, and Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy. To mark the 30th anniversary, we will be launching various projects that go beyond the world of games over the next year as a token of our gratitude to everyone who has played Chrono Trigger so far.
No additional information has been provided about what these projects will entail, but fans are encouraged to keep an eye on the official social media channels and the website for more information. It seems that the company plans to trickle out news about the festivities instead of announcing a lineup in one go.
Chrono Trigger Celebrates 30 Years In Potentially Unconventional Ways
This Might Mean A Remaster Is Not In The Cards
In recent years, many older projects have been receiving remakes that enable both old and new fans to revisit classics from decades ago. Chrono Trigger fans have been clamoring for the RPG to make its own comeback in the form of a remake, as well, but Square Enix has remained quiet on the topic. The wording of the 30-year anniversary announcement makes it even less likely that fans will see a new Chrono Trigger title in the year.

28 Years Ago, Final Fantasy 7 Developers Accidentally Made The Best Argument For FF7 Remake
Almost 30 years ago, the developers of Final Fantasy 7 wanted to do something that wouldn't be possible until the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
It seems more likely that the "projects" that go beyond the screen will consist of special events, rather than a remaster announcement. This might include collaborations, concerts and plays, and more along those lines.
Several video games have been adapted to the stage in Japan, including an incredible traditional kabuki performance of Final Fantasy X.
Unfortunately, these types of events don't always make it to the West, so it's possible that Western fans will miss out on some of the festivities. The fact that the post was only shared on the Japanese X may indicate that Chrono Trigger fans in the West are out of luck if they want to partake in whatever events Square Enix has planned for the title.
Chrono Trigger Was An Incredibly Influential Game
It Defined A Generation Of Gaming
Chrono Trigger is one of the most iconic video games ever made, and is considered to be a defining title in a generation that consisted of many firsts. The game was the creation of Yuji Horii of Dragon Quest, Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball, and Hironobu Sakaguchi of Final Fantasy, and all three influences can be seen clearly in the art style and storytelling. The game played with new elements that had never been done before, including an overhauled battle system where character placement mattered, whose influences can still be seen today.
The title inspired many games to come, shaping the evolution of video games in the 30 years since its release. Its memorable characters and compelling time-travel storytelling make it a classic still loved by many. Fans can look forward to some fun events as Square Enix gears up to celebrate Chrono Trigger.
