While on display, Codices will give you a boost to your overall Science yield, which allows you to advance down Civ 7’s Technology Tree. You will also want to collect Codices to help advance your progress on the Science Legacy Path.

How To Get Codices In Civ 7
Codices Can Mainly Be Earned Through Research
There are a few ways to earn Codices in Civ 7, but the most reliable way is through the Technology and Civic Trees. When looking at what Tech or Civic to research, there will be a list of new buildings or units you can develop listed beneath it. There will also sometimes be little plus symbols that show you will earn an additional reward for completing research on a given Technology or Civic, which can sometimes be a Codex. Hovering your cursor over the given research project will show you what you’ll get, so you can see which gives Codices.
Although these are the main ways to get a Codex in Civ 7, there are a few others you can look out for. Civ 7’s new narrative events will sometimes reward you with a Codex, depending on what choice you make. You can also earn Codices by becoming the Suzerin of City-States, completing the Nalanda Wonder, or from a Great Person in specific civilizations.

Civ 7 Abandoning One Classic Map Type Could Have A Huge Impact
Civilization 7 has removed a fan-favorite map type due to its huge changes to the core gameplay, which may disappoint some players.
There are more Codices on the Technology Tree than on the Civics Tree, so when trying to earn Codices through research, it is better to focus on Science than Culture. Narrative events will explicitly tell you which choice will reward you with a Codex, so there is no guesswork needed there. It is usually better to pick a Codex from these options than a simple boost to certain resources, since there are a limited number of ways to earn Codices.
How To Display Codices In Civ 7
Codices Can Be Displayed In Buildings With Slots For Them
To display a Codex, you will first need a building that has slots for one. You will start off with your Palace which has one slot, but to get more you will need to construct new buildings. In the Antiquity Age, Libraries will give you two Codex slots, and Academies will give you three. You’ll need the Writing Technology to construct Libraries, and the Mathematics Technology to construct Academies. Buildings will tell you how many slots for Codices they have before you construct them if you are ever wondering which to build.
Once you have a Codex in Civilization 7 and want to display it, you will click on the View Great Works option at the top of your screen, it is the one that looks like a little white vase on a dark blue background. Once open, you will see your available Codices as well as any buildings with open slots for them. Click a slot that you want to fill, then click on the Codex you want to place there.
