Maelle is one of my personal favorite characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 when it comes to combat mechanics. Her style revolves around dueling and incorporates three different Stances that buff her skills in different ways. I think Maelle's best build utilizes her many excellent Fire-based elemental attacks and a unique weapon that automatically places her in Virtuose Stance at the beginning of each battle. This build synergizes really well with Lune's Fire attacks and Gustave's Break-building style, and is viable all the way from Act 1 to Act 3.

WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR CLAIR OBSCUR: EXPEDITION 33!In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 gameplay, Maelle has three distinct Stances that give her different buffs based on which Stance she is in and which skills she uses. She will switch between Stances each turn depending on skill/attack choice or weapon effects, moving from a Stanceless position that gives her no buffs, a Defensive Stance, which allows her to take less damage and accumulate AP for dodges and parries, an Offensive Stance that increases damage both given and received, and the Virtuose Stance that gives her a +200% damage buff.

Best Weapons & Attributes For Maelle In Clair Obscur

The Medalum Saber Is Ideal For Stacking Burn

While there are plenty of excellent Fire-based weapons for Maelle as you explore Clair Obscur, the best option for Maelle doesn't have Fire as its inherent elemental type. The Medalum saber is a unique Maelle weapon acquired during the Gestral Village Tournament if you win the final battle against Sciel playing as Maelle. Medalum is primo for several reasons, but primarily because of its three unique upgrade bonuses. At level 4, Medalum will start Maelle in Virtuose Stance, which is an excellent way of getting the upper hand at the beginning of a fight.

Using a Skill of the same stance-type will result in Maelle going Stanceless, so you'll want to find a rhythm that rotates between each Stance for optimal effect.

At level 10, Medalum applies double the Burn stacks when Maelle is in Virtuose Stance, while at Level 20, all Burn damage is doubled while in Virtuose Stance. These two upgrades are completely overpowered in practice, especially when incorporating some of the various Pictos and Luminas that stack Burn and deal increased Burn damage from Fire skills.

April 2025 is a relatively quite month for games, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of amazing indies and AAA titles to grab.

Medalum scales primarily with Defense, giving Maelle excellent damage resistance while also buffing the weapon damage. Its secondary scaling attribute is Agility, which means Maelle will also benefit from having more turns during combat while also increasing Medalum's damage. While you can dump all your attribute points into these, consider investing in Might as well to increase your damage even further.

Best Skills For Maelle In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Fire-Based Skills Are OP For Maelle With Medalum Equipped

Clair Obscur Maelle Skills best build

To take full advantage of the Medalum's Burn effects and starting in Virtuose Stance, you'll want to incorporate all of Maelle's Fire-based attacks for the best results. These include Rain of Fire, Combustion, Pyrolyse, and Burning Canvas in the late game. Since you'll be starting off in Virtuose Stance, you can use Burning Canvas, Rain of Fire, or Pyrolyse to apply a huge stack of Burn on a given enemy on your first turn, though you'll need to have sufficient AP stacked up with Lumina and Pictos buffs to use Pyrolyse right away.

Finding a good rotation with these skills isn't too difficult if you incorporate Swift Stride into your loadout, as this will switch Maelle back to Virtuose Stance if she attacks a Burning target. Essentially, you'll want to use Swift Stride every other attack if possible to keep Maelle in Virtuose Stance as often as possible. If the target's Break Bar has been filled, I recommend having Fleuret Fury slotted as a way to deal massive single-target damage, possibly Break the enemy, and also keep Maelle in Virtuose Stance for the next turn.

Best Pictos & Luminas For Maelle

Use Double Burn To Stack Even More Burn

Clair Obscur Maelle Full Loadout Best Build

In of Pictos and Lumina ives, you'll want to incorporate as many Burn buffs as possible. The Double Burn Pictos is an essential item for this build, and when combined with the effect from Medalum, you'll be able to stack quadruple Burn on enemies when in Virtuose Stance. Critical Burn is another essential Pictos, giving you increased Critical Chance against Burning enemies.

Burning Mark is another excellent Burn stacking Pictos and/or Lumina, but you'll want to make sure you have another character in your party that can apply Markassive Luminas should incorporate as many AP-boosting sources as possible, such as the Energising Start and Dead Energy ives. I'd also highly recommend including First Strike, which will let Maelle play first, as well as Healing Fire and Fueling Break.

Healing Fire will heal Maelle by 25% when attacking a Burning target, while Fueling Break will double the target's Burn stack if you Break their stance. The upside potential for Burn stacks is ridiculous here, and unless an enemy is immune to Fire damage, you'll be in really good shape.

Clair Obscur is coming soon to Xbox, PC, and PS5, but will it be on Game starting day one, or will you need to buy it separately to play?

ive Maelle is also an excellent choice for your Solo duel fighter. While you can buff all of your characters with Luminas that affect solo fighting, this build gives Maelle a ridiculous advantage in one-on-one encounters such as the Gestral Tourney. Overall, this build will make Maelle one of the most powerful of your party and literally melt nearly every enemy you come across in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
