turn Cloverfield into a franchise, but they did so with spinoffs instead of a sequel.

There have already been two installments of the The Cloverfield Paradox was made and received a surprise drop on Netflix immediately after the Super Bowl in 2018. After the last installment failed to generate as much interest, the Cloverfield franchise is going back to the beginning.

According to THR, Abrams and Bad Robot are now developing Cloverfield 2 as a true sequel to the original movie. Joe Barton has been hired to write Cloverfield 2 after ing Matt Reeves' The Batman HBO Max spinoff/prequel series as its new showrunner. Abrams is producing Cloverfield 2, but Reeves is said not to be involved with the movie. It is currently not expected to be shot in the same found-footage style as the original, and how it will continue Cloverfield's story is being kept under wraps.

This isn't the first time that a true sequel to Cloverfield has been mentioned. Paramount announced in 2018 that Cloverfield 2 was in the works and said that it was coming soon at the time. It has been nearly three years since that announcement was made, so clearly, Cloverfield 2 has taken a bit longer to get off the ground than expected. At the time, it was stated that the sequel would receive a theatrical release. This update doesn't reaffirm that stance, but it should still be the case.

As Cloverfield 2 continues to move forward, it will be fascinating to see what form it ultimately takes. The decision to not use the found-footage technique makes sense on some level, but that was also a defining quality of the original film. More importantly, though, there's no telling where Cloverfield 2's story will go. Most of the main characters died by the end of the movie, and it's now been more than a decade since the movie came out. The sequel could take place shortly after Cloverfield's events, but it may also feature an entirely new set of characters. Hopefully, it won't be too long before more information on Cloverfield 2 is revealed.
