Summary

  • Tory's surprise betrayal and alignment with Kreese shakes up Cobra Kai's team dynamics.
  • Questions remain about the remaining two fighters on Kreese's team for the Sekai Taikai tournament.
  • Speculation arises about Yoon and Kenny potentially being the secret fighters on Kreese's team.

Cobra Kai's main characters, is that she's decided to align with her former mentor, Martin Kove's John Kreese.

As the last scene of the Cobra Kai season 6 part 1 finale has confirmed, Tory accepted Kreese's offer to his team. From the looks of things, she'll serve the role of Cobra Kai's female captain, thus pitting her against Sam in the individual competition. As for the male captain, it looks like that job will go to Kwon, the vicious young fighter Kreese took under his wing. However, questions remain about the rest of the students Kreese and Kim Da-Eun have assembled for the tournament.

Why Cobra Kai Appears To Be Hiding Kreese's Other Two Tournament Fighters

Cobra Kai Hasn't Revealed Kreese's Full Team Yet

Curiously, Kreese and Kim only had four students at their side, even though six are required for each time. In addition to Tory and Kwon, there was a pair of unnamed students from Kim's dojo. As for the remaining two of the team, it's unclear who they are. Theoretically, they too could be among the South Korean students that Kim has already been training. Kreese having five of Kim's students and only one of his own would make sense because Tory is the only one loyal to him, but the absence of two suggests otherwise. After all, Cobra Kai had an an opportunity to perfectly juxtapose Kreese's six fighters with Miyagi-do's Sekai Taikai team.

The fact that Cobra Kai didn't take that direction could be a sign that the series is purposely hiding his other two fighters. The most sensible reason for that would be that Cobra Kai has other twists it's hiding. It's possible that early in Cobra Kai season 6 part 2, the series plans to dive deeper into the steps Kreese took to put together his team. Beyond his advice to Kwon and outreach to Tory, season 6's first five episodes didn't provide much attention to Kreese's Sekai Taikai plans. The show could rectify that with more Kreese scenes set before the Sekai Taikai.

That being the case would explain why Cobra Kai may not be ready to unveil Kreese's whole team. Part of that could also have to do with the possibility that one - or both - of the two students is an existing character. As big as that would be, the significance of such a reveal would be limited in that scene, especially, since the focus was Tory's surprise betrayal. Another twist arriving at the same moment would distract from the shock of seeing Tory teaming up with Kreese again.

Yoon Was Originally Kim Da-Eun's Best Student

Kim's Second Best Student Should Be A Top Choice For A Roster Spot

Yoon in Cobra Kai

Perhaps the most obvious option for a spot on Kreese's team is Yoon. Seen early on in the series, Yoon was established as Kim's top fighter (before Kwon mercilessly beat him). While Cobra Kai has proven that he's not as competent as Kwon, it's still apparent that he's a formidable fighter. If he wasn't, Kim wouldn't regard him as her best. Considering Kim Sun-Yung's reputation and his granddaughter's skill, it's only logical for their top student to be a force to be reckoned with, and a challenging opponent for anyone on Johnny and Daniel's team to face in the Sekai Taikai, even if he's no match for Kwon.

For that reason, there's a chance he's on the team as well, begrudgingly working with Kwon. How the two get past this issue could be dealt with at some point in Cobra Kai season 6 part 2 and perhaps add some tension to their side of the story. This could also help develop Kwon's character and set up a tough fight for someone like Demetri or Hawk. If the plan is for Kwon to be Cobra Kai's final villain for the teenage characters in the series, propping up Kwon by continuing to make use of Yoon would be a good move for the show. How the series contrasts his traditional style with Kwon's rebellious nature goes hand-in-hand with that idea.

Kenny Could Be One Of Kreese's Secret Fighters

Kenny Re One Of His Original Two Senseis

Dallas Dupree Young as Kenny in Cobra Kai season 4

Another fighter who could be a worthy addition to Kreese's team is Kenny. He, more so than Tory, has a reason for being on bad with Miyagi-do. It's important to note that while he has falsely put the blame on Anthony, he's not wrong about being cheated out of a spot on the team. This could have motivated him to accept a roster position from Kreese. That's not unfeasible, given that Kenny probably doesn't hold any sort of grudge against Kreese. It wasn't Kreese who bought Cobra Kai's tournament victory, so he may not object to helping Kreese win the Sekai Taikai.

Not only that, but Kreese could sway Kenny with the convincing argument that it was he who won them their opportunity to compete in it in the first place. That fact could allow Kreese to make the case that it's only right that Kenny represent them in Cobra Kai. If he gives Kenny the recognition and respect he may feel he was denied at Miyagi-do, it's not hard to imagine him being tempted by a potential offer from the new Cobra Kai. Not only would this be his shot at competing on the world stage and fulfilling his ambitions, it'd give him a chance to strike back at Miyagi-do, who he thinks wronged him.

If that did indeed happen, that would provide a perfect explanation for why Kenny was conspicuously absent in episode 5. He may have already been planning to defect from Miyagi-do and fight for Kreese in the Sekai Taikai. Or, he could have simply walked out on the dojo, thus leaving the door open for Kreese to find him and officially invite him to the team.

Additionally, having Kenny on Kreese's side fits well with the show's current trajectory and setup. The real reason Kenny was left off the Miyagi-do team, Devon, will be competing in the Sekai Taikai. Clearly, Devon's deception in Cobra Kai will be a key plot point going forward, and Kenny being on hand at the Sekai Taikai creates a path for the series to resolve that arc. He may not know the whole truth, but what he does know about the incident could result in the truth coming to light in Cobra Kai season 6.
