Warzone on PC have only exacerbated the issue. The massive amount of space the game takes up on consoles and PC has led fans to frequently voice their frustration with how severely the file size limits their ability to play other games, but their cries fall on deaf ears.
While other games have taken up a PS5 each have an internal 1 TB SSD, players are bound to discover they'll need to purchase additional external storage devices to stave off the inevitable game of install Jenga that plagues them now.
Further bolstering these file size lamentations, Twitter BattleNonSense shared an image showcasing the first-person shooter’s file filling up an entire 256GB SSD. BattleNonSense tagged the official Call of Duty, Activision, and Blizzard Entertainment Twitter channels in the post, informing them that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare “no longer fits onto a 250GB SSD and cannot be updated.” They also requested that the publisher split the game’s single-player, multiplayer, and Warzone assets into separate installations so players can pick and choose which versions they have installed based on what they want to play at any given time, something that PC players' console brethren are already able to do.
Despite Infinity Ward’s claims it was condensing Modern Warfare’s file size by compressing assets, the team’s solution does not seem to be benefiting the game’s community. It’s true that file sizes have become progressively larger as the industry’s technology has advanced and games become more demanding, but for a single title to take up the entirety of a storage device is patently farcical. Given the cost of decent storage devices, especially when considering the necessity for SSDs in modern gaming, no single title should consume a device’s whole capacity.
Modern Warfare’s developer’s attempts at compressing the game’s assets to save room on players’ devices is irable, but an ineffective, illusory gesture at best. Since Modern Warfare and Warzone were combined into a single installation, those efforts seem to have been wasted. Maybe Modern Warfare’s file size won’t matter as much when Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War releases since a sizable portion of Call of Duty fans will transition to that entry, but the principle remains the same.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
