Comedy is one of those genres that, in some ways, provides balance and magic to our world. We all of us have to confront the bleakness and unpleasantness of the world around us, so we turn to comedy to give us a form of release, a reminder of the joy and happiness in the world.

As one of those signs that likes beautiful things and is more than a little idealistic at times, Libras will find themselves particularly drawn to comedy, though they might want to steer clear of the darker ones. Here are 5 comedies that Libras will relate to and 5 more that would just turn them off.

Love: Legally Blonde (2001)

Legally Blonde - Ox Cropped

It’s no secret that Libras like the beautiful things in life. This sometimes means that they can be a bit materialistic. They will thus find much to enjoy in this film, which is both quite funny and also gorgeous, with lots of attention to detail.

It helps that lead actress Reese Witherspoon exudes charm and charisma and spades. The film’s emphasis on her cleverness, which leads to the film’s happy ending, is sure to appeal to the Libra.

HATE: In Bruges (2008)

Though comedies are often joyful and light-hearted, it’s a mode that can also be used to explore the darker side of the human psyche. That is certainly the case with In Bruges.

Though stylishly shot and exquisitely acted by the likes of Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes, it is definitely not for the faint of heart, with lots of violence interspersed with its bleak cleverness. The idealistic Libra will soon find itself turned off by its relentless cynicism.

LOVE: It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)

A still from 1963 comedy ensemble movie It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World

Who doesn’t love a madcap comedy? There’s just something pleasing about watching a talented cast of great comedy actors running around engaging in all sorts of silly antics, and that is exactly what this film provides. Indeed, the film is something of an embarrassment of riches in of the comedic talent on offer.

It’s also a fundamentally good-hearted film and there are no real villains; just a lot of self-interested people who don’t always think things through well enough for their own good.

HATE: Burn After Reading (2008)

The Coen Brothers have developed a reputation for creating films that are searingly brilliant, with an incisive sense of dark humor that’s as sharp as a knife. Anyone who has seen their spy comedy Burn After Reading can attest to seeing their signature style in almost every frame.

Also typical for a Coen Brothers film, there is quite a lot of comically brutal violence and backstabbing here which is sure to turn off the optimistic Libra, who doesn’t often want to be reminded of the negative aspects of life.

LOVE: The Thin Man (1934)

The leads of the Thin Man sitting with a dog

This is an oldie but definitely a goodie. The first in a series of films that would pair up the divine pair of William Holden and Myrna Loy, it’s a polished film that is as much about the manners of the '30s as it is about the central murder mystery.

Even though the film is shot in black and white, it still shows all of the signs that it was produced by MGM (a studio best known for its opulence), and the Libra will appreciate the many beautiful things (and people) that appear on the screen.

Hate: M*A*S*H (1970)

Mash Film 1970

This film, which would later be developed into one of the most popular sitcoms in history, is a lot bleaker than its successor. In fact, the theme song for the later series is an instrumental of a song from the film entitled “Suicide is Painless.”

Unlike the sitcom which tended to be lighter in tone, the original film is quite acerbic in its humor and the characters lack most of the charm that their televised successors had. Its cynical tone makes it a less than ideal choice for the Libra viewer.

LOVE: Some Like It Hot (1959)

Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe, and Jack Lemmon performing in Some Like It Hot

Among all of the directors of classic Hollywood cinema, perhaps no director had more of a reputation for producing clever films than Billy Wilder. No matter what genre he turned to-whether noir, comedy, or drama-he always managed to bring out the innate cleverness in the material.

Anyone who has seen this film, which focuses on two men who dress up as women in order to escape from the mob, can attest to its cleverness. Libra will find themselves wildly amused by both the writing and the performances.

HATE: Heathers (1988)

Winona Ryder, Shannen Doherty, and Lisanne Falk in Heathers

Few films can best Heathers in of pure, uncut cynicism, which in many ways encapsulates the world-weary attitude of Gen X. However, there’s no question that the cast, particularly Winona Rider and Christian Slater, turn in excellent performances.

While some of the other signs in the zodiac calendar might enjoy the film’s biting and sardonic sense of humor and its morbidly satirical take on the teen film, Libra will most likely find itself more than a little aghast at the flippant way in which the film deals with violence and psychopathy.

LOVE: Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Bridget Jones sat on her sofa in her pyjamas

There’s just something endearing and good-hearted about this film, which stars Renee Zelwegger in the title role, a woman who struggles to find love and ends up finding it with not one but two men. There’s undeniable chemistry among the three leads (the cast also includes Colin Firth and Hugh Grant), and the humor is sharp without being bitter.

There’s much here for the Libra to enjoy, especially the essential goodness that exists at the heart of the main character and her search for love and fulfillment.

HATE: The Lobster (2016)

A man and a woman holding hands and walking in The Lobster.

Some films are so strange that it’s hard to really capture how unsettling they are in a written description. That is the case with The Lobster, which takes place in a world in which it is mandatory for people to form a romantic partnership or must be turned into an animal of their choice.

It’s not just the fact that the film’s strange premise will turn off the Libra, but also its rather darker comedic sensibilities.
