Joel McHale provides a promidate regarding the acclaimed sitcom Community, which ran from 2009 to 2015. The series follows the humorous tales of a lawyer who, after facing suspension, has to enroll in community college. In addition to McHale, the show featured a leading cast including Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase, Alison Brie, and Gillian Jacobs. Years after the show ended in 2015, a Community movie was officially announced in fall 2022.
In an interview with ScreenRant, McHale provides a hopeful update on the Community movie. The actor says that the team has funding for the movie, which was a "gigantic hurdle" that they had to cross. He is hoping that it will get off the ground "sometime after September," but seems confident overall that the movie will happen. Check out the full quote from McHale below:
I think that will happen, and I say that as an optimistic participant, I think it will. I'm hoping sometime after September, maybe in October, November. We have the money, it's funded. That is a gigantic hurdle. So, that's why I'm pretty bullish on it happening. It's going to happen.
What This Means For The Community Movie
The Community Movie Has Had A Tough Road
A Community movie has been in talks for years, even before it was officially announced in 2022. In the intermittent years, the production has confirmed the return of several stars, including Pudi, McHale, Brie, Jacobs, Glover, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong, and Yvette Nicole Brown. Despite this huge buy-in from its previous stars, the project was sidelined by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that hit Hollywood in 2023. It was confirmed in April 2024 that, since starting up again, the film had a finished script.

Abed’s 10 Best Episodes In Community, Ranked
Abed Nadir is one of the most beloved characters in Community, and he had some of the most iconic episodes throughout the show’s six seasons.
Despite their significant progress, however, the Community movie has still been slow to get started. McHale's quote confirms that it is funding that has really held up the film for a long time. Rash and McHale had both hoped that the Community movie would arrive sometime in 2025. With filming hopefully beginning in the fall, a 2025 date will not happen.
Our Take On The Community Movie News
McHale Has Given Similar Updates Before
This is not the first time that McHale has seemed confident in the Community movie happening. McHale confirmed that he and the Community team had "the money" for the film in July 2024. However, it still has not made significant progress between then and now. So, while I am still somewhat hopeful based on McHale's statement, the fact that similar statements have been made without being coupled with significant forward momentum makes things seem less certain.
