Story details for the The Conjuring has been a massively successful series for Warner Bros. ever since the first film’s record-breaking debut in 2013. The most recent sequel in the main series arrived in 2016, and since that time, fans have been eagerly awaiting the third installment.

It’s not often that a highly successful sequel – particularly in the horror genre, matches the acclaim of the first film, but in the case of The Conjuring, that’s exactly what happened. So far, James Wan has brought his own brand of filmmaking magic to the series, but for the third film, Wan steps aside for The Conjuring 2 screenwriter David Leslie-Johnson McGoldrick is returning for the sequel, as are Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who play real-life paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren. There’s been a persistent shadow over the film due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, and so far, the film has been delayed until June 2021. Beyond this, not a lot has been known about The Conjuring 3 other than it dealing with another real-life supernatural case.

Now, thanks to Warner Bros., fans of the horror series have their a better idea of the story of The Conjuring 3. The new footage can be seen below (29:40 mark), along with a plot breakdown that expands the film’s focus on Arne Johnson, whose 1981 case marked the first time that demonic possession was cited as a defense in a murder trial. This time around, The Conjuring franchise forgoes the haunted house model and brings its horror out into the real world. According to series star Patrick Wilson:

“The Devil Made Me Do It reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.”

While fans of The Conjuring series will no doubt be interested in all of the BTS footage, The Conjuring 3 segment is arguably the most interesting part of the 30-minute video. The video not only gives us the first look at Ruairi O'Connor as Arne Johnson, but the segment also reveals that the real Arne Johnson is involved in the filmmaking process. Having Johnson on set likely helped O'Connor master his role, but will also allow The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It be more authentic.

For fans, even just a brief glimpse at the film is enough to make waiting for the official release that much harder. Though The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It will have some new components to it this time around that haven’t always been part of the franchise, the key aspects remain intact. A new director will bring a different point of view, but this latest footage seems to assure fans that the series remains in capable hands.
