The Curse of La Llorona, which performed pretty badly at the box office and received largely negative reviews from both audiences and critics.
In the past, there has been some wild speculation about what the third film could introduce, given the long history of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, which is the basis of the films. The franchise has branched out in numerous directions already, exploring spin-offs with the The Nun. The third film to follow the Warrens, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is about a real-life case the couple investigated, which placed the blame for Arne Cheyenne Johnson's murder of his landlord on demonic possession.
The film was scheduled for release in 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Conjuring 3 needs to be solid in order to stay afloat among a horror-filled 2021. Here's what we know about the film.
The Conjuring 3 Is Completed
Filming for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It took place in Atlanta, Georgia beginning in June 2019. Lead actress Vera Farmiga announced on Instagram that she had wrapped as of August of the same year. Patrick Wilson is set to reprise his role as Ed Warren with Megan Ashley Brown and Mitchell Hoog ing the cast to play younger versions of the Warrens in the film.
If there's skepticism surrounding director Michael Chaves carrying the film without Wan's presence, news that The Conjuring 2 writer David Leslie Johnson has penned the script for The Devil Made Me Do It should serve as somewhat of a silver lining, though Wan has always seemed optimistic and complimentary of Chaves' directorial skill.
What Is The Conjuring 3's Story About?
James Wan confirmed the plot details for The Conjuring 3 during an interview with Bloody Disgusting in December 2018, citing that this film would be different than the other two because it's "not necessarily based on an artifact, but it's based on one of the Warrens' case files." Wan has always felt it's important to tell the stories of Ed and Lorraine Warren, and in a way, this is one outlet to keep their legacy alive forever, especially since Lorraine Warren ed away in April 2019. Her husband Ed died in 2006.
Earlier speculation about the film included the notion that The Conjuring 3 might explore lycanthropy, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will follow the 1981 case of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who was convicted of manslaughter, but his defense claimed he was possessed by a demon at the time of the crime. The film's trailer further reveals the Warrens attending Johnson's trial, as well as the origin story of his possession, which also involves Johnson's girlfriend Debbie Glatzel's brother David, who was believed to be possessed by the demon first before it moved on to Johnson. Rather than focusing on an object, The Conjuring 3 is going further with a possessed person, which remains true to the Warrens' case files.
When The Conjuring 3 Will Release
