Jo's ending can be explained by Constellation's superposition explanation

Constellation's ending scene shows that Jo, who was previously left behind on the ISS by Paul, is somehow still alive. In the scene, she still has the fatal injury she had sustained after the ISS accident, making it hard not to wonder how she is still alive. Although Constellation episode 8's credits start rolling before anything else about her is revealed, some early moments from the series might have answers. Constellation introduces several scientific concepts throughout its runtime, but its plot primarily focuses on a fictional representation of quantum superposition.

The Jo portrayed in Constellation's ending is likely the liminal Jo, who, like Schrödinger's cat, is both dead and alive at the same time.

As Henry explains in Constellation's episode 3, superposition is a phenomenon where one particle exists in two alternate states simultaneously. While the particle is black in one world, it is white in another. At the same time, the particle also exists in a liminal world between the two worlds, where it is in both states at the same time and only reveals its true state when it is being observed. Like the particle described by Henry, all Constellation characters also have two alternate states. Additionally, they also exist in a liminal world where they can either of the two states on observation.

Jo, too, exists in two alternate states/worlds/timelines in Constellation. After the two alternate versions of Jo switch places, one Jo is dead in space on the ISS while the other is on Earth living with the alternate versions of her family . The Jo portrayed in Constellation's ending is likely the liminal Jo, who, like Schrödinger's cat, is both dead and alive at the same time. She is like the dead USSR cosmonaut, Valya, who, despite being dead, continues to exist in a quantum state, appearing either dead or alive upon observation.

Constellation season 1 also dabbles with quantum entanglement, which explains how Bud manages to control Henry despite being in an alternate universe.

Why Jo Accepts Her New Reality In Constellation's Ending

Irena convinces Jo to be grateful for what she has

While one Jo floats in space on the ISS, the one who replaces her in her universe struggles to fit in. The "alive" Jo's arc primarily revolves around her trying to unravel the mystery surrounding her strange, unfamiliar reality while attempting to establish communication with her real daughter from the alternate universe. After growing increasingly worried about Jo's mental health, Irena even resorts to extreme measures by giving her shock therapy.

However, after realizing Jo will not give up on her quest to return to her original universe, Irena has a heart-to-heart conversation with her. Irena tries to convince her that regardless of what she believes, she should be grateful that she still has her family. She also hints that other astronauts who went down the same rabbit hole completely lost their grip on reality, pointing towards the first man to visit space who lives in the same facility as Jo in Constellation's finale.

She also reminds her that she is about to have a baby and also has a daughter to look after, both of which would be impossible if she refused to accept the world she is currently in. She also tells Jo that there is no point questioning what happened in space because there is no way they can turn things around. This helps Jo realize that instead of doubting whether she is with her real husband and daughter, she should be grateful for what she has and accept her new reality.

Irena's Mail To The Astronauts In Constellation's Finale Explained

Irena's mail suggests she still believes in the alternate universe

Barbara Sukowa's Irena Lysenko in Constellation curiously looking at Jo

In a brief scene in Constellation's finale, Irena emails several former astronauts, requesting them to tell her if they have been experiencing strange things after returning from space. Considering how Irena seemingly remained in denial about the alternate universe throughout Constellation's runtime and even tried to convince Jo that she should accept the way things are, it seems odd that she curiously asks other cosmonauts about their experiences. However, her email suggests that as much as she would like to deny the existence of the parallel and liminal universes, a part of her still believes in them.

In Constellation's finale, she also goes through Jo's ultrasound and seemingly finds a weird image of a liminal fetus, which nearly convinces her that something is not right. Irena also briefly interacts with Bud in Constellation's finale, assuming he is Henry. However, when Bud tells her he is not who she thinks she is, she starts believing that the parallel universe exists.

Why Bud Breaks The CAL In Constellation Episode 8

Bud wishes to stay where he is

As established in Constellation's previous episodes, both Bud and Henry went on the Apollo 18 mission in their respective universes. While Bud's mission was a success with no casualties, Henry's mission went south when two of his fellow cosmonauts died. However, somehow, Bud and Henry switched universes with one another before returning home to Earth. As a result, Bud landed on the planet with dead astronauts, facing the dire consequences of Henry's failed space mission. Meanwhile, Henry became a hero, reaping the rewards of Bud's success.

Constellation's CAL (Cold Atom Lab) is based on a real eponymous experiment instrument on board the International Space Station since 2018.

Over the years, Bud was forgotten, and he grew increasingly sore about the turn of events in his life. Henry, in contrast, devoted himself to scientific research and even won a Nobel Prize. Luckily for Bud, his fate twists again when he finds himself in his original universe in Constellation's episode 7, while Henry returns to his original universe. Realizing that this is his opportunity to seek revenge from Henry for stealing his life and living his remaining years in peace, Bud smashes the CAL to ensure he and Henry do not swap universes again.

How Bud & Henry Have The Same DNA Despite Being Different People

The same DNA revelation says a lot about the two alternate universes

Jonathan Banks as Bud/Henry Caldera in Constellation

After Henry returns to his original universe, he gets blamed for shooting Paul. To prove his innocence to law enforcers, he claims that Bud committed the crime and even asks them to compare his DNA with the man who was living in his apartment. To Henry's surprise, even though he es his polygraph test, his DNA turns out to be the same as Bud's. This establishes that even though Bud and Henry grew up in different universes, their lives and ancestral history before their respective Apollo 18 missions were likely similar.

While nature plays a significant role in determining one's traits and predispositions, the stark differences in Bud and Henry's personalities and overall demeanors highlight how nurture can fork the direction of one's life in a completely different direction.

The similarities in their DNA also highlight the role of both nature and nurture in shaping one's identity. While nature plays a significant role in determining one's traits and predispositions, the stark differences in Bud and Henry's personalities and overall demeanors highlight how nurture can fork the direction of one's life in a completely different direction. Since the change in Bud's life trajectory after the Apollo 18 mission was not under his control, the similarities in the two characters' DNA and differences in their life paths also underscore the complex nature of free will and identity.

How Constellation Season 1's Ending Sets Up Season 2

Constellation season 1's cliffhanger ending proves there's room for season 2

Constellation season 1's ending establishes that the Apple TV+ show has barely scratched the surface of all the parallel universe stories it can explore. As the liminal Jo grabs her iPad on the ISS in Constellation's closing moments, it becomes evident that she will try to establish with her daughter, Alice. Even though "alive" Jo and her family in her universe have decided to accept their reality, things could take a complex turn after liminal Jo tries to get in touch with her family.

Like Bud lived with the consequences of Henry's failed space mission, Henry is now facing the ramifications of Bud's action. Therefore, he, too, would want to swap places with him again. However, considering how he will be imprisoned, it seems unlikely that he will be able to build the CAL again. Constellation's finale also establishes that Paul is still alive. This could mean he might attempt to recreate the CAL to return to his universe in season 2. Irena, too, will probably continue her research in Constellation season 2 and make some breakthroughs into what is actually happening.
