A new trailer for the developer’s earlier game, Alan Wake, and fans were quickly convinced that they were more than just Easter eggs, positing a narrative connection between the two.

Control and Alan Wake Control and Alan Wake were connected, it never explicitly said that the two would cross over.

All that obfuscation is gone now, with PlayStation's release of the new trailer for Control’s AWE expansion. One of the first things that Alan Wake fans will notice in the new trailer is that it’s his voice saying the line “Whatever you do, stay in the light.” From there, the trailer shows some of what players can expect in the expansion, which apparently includes new enemy types, a terrifying creature stalking the Bureau, and Alan Wake himself, whose face is the final shot of the trailer. Remedy is even more explicit in a post on the PlayStation Blog, mentioning that Control star Jessie Faden will have to investigate a mystery from Bright Falls, the setting of Alan Wake, and teasing that the Easter eggs that tie various Remedy games aren’t just Easter eggs after all, but part of a shared universe that it’s finally ready to reveal.

Along with AWE’s new story content, it will also include an arcade cabinet that lets players replay bosses from Control, along with the fan-favorite Ashtray Maze. A free update launching this month will also add usability updates, a new ability upgrade, and more checkpoints to some of the base game’s missions. AWE is set to release on August 27th.

Control fans have been waiting a long time for its second and final expansion. While previous DLC kept fans busy in the world of Control, the inevitable crossover with Alan Wake was always what fans were waiting for. With a mystery years in the making, AWE has a lot to pay off, but Remedy seems up to the task.
