Lifetime has made hundreds of Christmas films over the years. At the end of this year, one of the network’s new movies includes A Cowboy Christmas Romance, which is set for release on December 9.
As Lifetime executive Tia Maggini responds to Variety, A Cowboy Christmas Romance will break tradition by having a sex scene. Maggini says the scene comes in response to “an audience out there that’s hungry for grown-up romance.” Check out the quote from Maggini below:
“We think that there’s an audience out there that’s hungry for grown-up romance, and we’re looking forward to adding some smolder to the usual holiday sugar and spice. We love trying new things, and we’re excited about this new ‘first’ for us for a holiday movie.”
Star Jana Kramer and writer Sarah Drew also referenced the scene during an interview with iHeart Radio’s Whine Down Podcast. Read their quotes below:
Kramer: “Spoiler alert — he lays me down on some hay, and then we, you know. Obviously, it’s still Lifetime, it’s still family. But it was pushing limits there, too… They didn’t cut anything. I was so happy that they really left it all in there.”
Drew: “It all came out so beautifully, but especially the scene in the kitchen. I had written into the stage directions, ‘He pulls her up onto the counter, he shoves things off the table.’ I put it all in there, so I was like, ‘Don’t take the steam and the sex away from me. I wrote it on purpose, I want it in there.'
Everything To Know About A Cowboy Christmas Romance
Given the volume of Lifetime Christmas movies, the network surprisingly took until 2023 to feature a sex scene in one of their holiday films since romance is often at the core of Lifetime content. In particular, Lifetime's 2023 holiday slate is heavily focused on romances, including The Holiday Proposal Plan, Christmas Plus One, and Laughing All the Way.
A Cowboy Christmas Romance focuses on Lexie Crenshaw (Kramer), a real estate "closer" who returns to her hometown of Tubac, Arizona. She is sent there to handle a business deal with a horse rancher, Coby Mason (Adam Senn), and must convince him to give up his family's land. In addition, Lexie has to deal with her own personal matters by visiting her father (Bruce Thomas) and brother after leaving them behind ten years ago to pursue her career. The remaining cast includes Max Ehrich, Curt Mega, Lisa Lee, Mary-Margaret Humes, and Cassie Randolph.
