Marvel just debuted a new cowboy costume for Storm. The company has spent the past couple of years working effortlessly to push Storm to the pinnacle of the Marvel Universe's food chain. Feats like ing The Avengers receiving her own solo series is a testament to that push. What more can Marvel do to elevate Storm even further? Apparently, put a cowboy hat on her.

First revealed on X, David Nakayama's western variant cover for Storm #4 – written by Murewa Ayodele, with art by Lucas Werneck – features Storm embodying the Old West with a tip of her cowboy hat, her look accentuated by matching gloves, jean chaps, a pistol in her holster, and a bandana around her neck.

Storm is the latest in a long line of Marvel and DC superheroes, including Superman, who have adopted a cowboy look at some point in the past few years – though perhaps predictably, her western redesign is perhaps the sleekest and coolest yet.

While Storm is the latest in a long line, she is far from the first Marvel superhero to rock western throwback. Marvel frequently dedicates variant covers, alternate storylines, and sometimes even canonical tales entirely to placing their heroes in an Old West climate. While it may just be an excuse to get them to dress up as cowboys, and more often than not, it results in fan-favorite alternate looks for classic characters. This new instance is no different.

In a sense, a "cowboy" redesign is a rite of age for comic characters; for reasons that remain somewhat unclear, but are nevertheless evident, the idea of finding out what contemporary heroes would look like if they were transported back to the Old West has a wide appeal among comic book fandom. Equally surprising is the fact that these redesigns rarely fail to disappoint – and Storm's ranks among the most visually dynamic yet, which is as much of a product of her versaility as a character as it is a sign of artist David Nakamura's skill.

As is the case with most variant covers, this cowboy cover for Storm #4 isn't indicative of any canonical story coming in Storm's series, but just a fun cover to craft for the sake of it. However, the visual is strong enough to pique the interest in Storm fans wanting a Western story; after all, the cowboy aesthetic is making a comeback thanks largely to the resurgence of country music in 2024 thanks to releases from Beyoncé, Shaboozy, and Orville Peck. If Marvel were to make an actual canon story for "cowboy" Storm, fans will surely be thrilled to read it.
