The top graphics setting in Crysis Remastered is a PC-exclusive nod to the original game’s demanding specs. Crisis Remastered was released for the Nintendo Switch on July 23, 2020, but the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions were delayed due to poor visuals showcased in an underwhelming trailer.
The new release date for the remaining platforms is quickly approaching, however. recommended specs show the rerelease won't melt players' PCs, but this new setting looks to call back to original's status as a graphical benchmark.
In a nod to the original Crysis, Crytek took to the official Crysis Twitter to reveal Remastered's highest graphical mode, dedicating the post to the PC community. The top graphics mode is called "Can it Run Crysis?" and is designed to push players' high-end PCs to the limit, demanding "every last bit of [gamers'] hardware with unlimited settings - exclusively on PC!" The image posted reveals vibrant graphics, showing the player-character overlooking a beach, ocean, and lush forest, with mountains on the horizon beneath a blue sky and white clouds.
While the original Crysis being impossible to run on high-end PCs is a long-standing joke, it also was a source of immense frustration to those who had to shell out the money for a top-end gaming rig to run it. Though technology has come a long way since the original game’s release, the fear of a modern PC quaking at the thought of running Crysis Remastered was a very real fear for a lot of gamers. Luckily, Crysis Remastered's less intense settings still seem impressive, so those who can play while utilizing "Can it Run Crysis?" mode without much issue will likely gain little benefit other than bragging rights.
Having a top-end PC isn’t necessary in today’s gaming industry, though it is immensely satisfying to own a machine that can run anything in the next three to five years without upgrades. For some, having the best of the best is a matter of prevention, since that ache in the back of their heads tells them they might miss out on a new favorite game's highest settings. For others, the investment simply isn’t worth the money, and that’s O.K., too; even medium settings in today’s games can be beautiful.
Crysis Remastered is available on Nintendo Switch; coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 18, 2020.
