Actor Frank Grillo has cast doubt that his villain Crossbones will be returning to the Avengers: Endgame, crossing paths with Captain America once more under unique circumstances.
Brock Rumlow/Crossbones was created by Mark Gruenwold and Kieron Dwyer, first appearing in the Captain America comics in 1989. He is one of Cap's most infamous foes, possessing considerable martial arts training, marksmanship, and is highly adept at hand-to-hand combat. The character first appeared in live-action form in seemingly getting killed in the process. In Avengers: Endgame, the character appears when Captain America, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Hulk travel back to 2012 in order to retrieve some of the Infinity Stones.
In an interview with Uproxx, Grillo cast some doubt over whether or not he would return as Crossbones. When asked if he would be pursuing any comic book properties in the future, such as a possible new Punisher project on Disney+, Grillo stated, "That’s not in my trajectory now. It’s not where my life is taking me anymore, and my friend Jonny Bernthal did an amazing job." My life and what I want to do is much different now, and I think I’m outgrowing that whole kind-of Marvel and superhero thing."
Though Crossbones appeared to die in his last altercation with Captain America, there are rumors swirling around that the character keeper of the Soul Stone on the planet Vormir.
Grillo's Grossbones was heavily underutilized in the MCU. Grillo is not only a fantastic action star, but he can bring a visceral and palpable energy to a role when he needs to. Considering the character is one of Captain America's more well-known enemies in the comics, it was disappointing to see him discarded so quickly after the opening of Captain America: Civil War. However, if Grillo is able to return as the character, perhaps more can be done with the villain in order to flesh him out a bit more. It's disheartening to hear that Grillo has no plans to return to comic book films anytime soon. However, comic book fans can revisit his work as Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the meantime.
