Following her Emmy win for her role in The Crown season 4 covers the 1980s, which allowed the series to bring in two major historical figures: Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) and Thatcher. Their storylines helped propel The Crown to its most well-received season yet.
If anyone needs any indication of just how lauded season 4 is, they only need to look towards Sunday night's Emmys ceremony. The Crown won every single award in the drama category, from outstanding series to lead actress (for Olivia Colman as the Queen). Anderson took home the award for ing actress, beating out fellow Crown co-stars Helena Bonham Carter and Emerald Fennell, Aunjanue Ellis for Lovecraft Country, and four performers from The Handmaid's Tale (Samira Wiley, Yvonne Strahovski, Ann Dowd, and Madeline Brewer).
Following her win, Anderson spoke to reporters in the Emmy press room (via ScreenSlam). One reporter came right out of the gate with a rather odd question: "Have you talked to her [Margaret Thatcher] about this role at all?" This wouldn't be a strange query for someone playing a real life figure, but as Thatcher died in 2013, it didn't come across as it normally would have. Anderson responded very carefully, simply stating, "I have not spoken to Margaret." Very classy.
For The Crown, Anderson has won virtually every award she's been nominated for, including the Golden Globe and the SAG. Her performance received raves last year even before season 4 arrived on Netflix, as many watched the trailers and were stunned by the way she spoke and her physical transformation. Anderson has long been known for playing Agent Dana Scully on The X-Files, but it's probably safe to say her run as Margaret Thatcher on The Crown will become an equally enduring role for her.
As Thatcher's tenure as Prime Minister came to an end in The Crown's season 4 finale, Anderson likely won't return to the series in the future. Production is underway on season 5 with a brand new cast set to take over, led by Imelda Staunton's Queen Elizabeth. The Crown is slated to return sometime next year, and only time will tell if it can earn as many accolades as season 4 just did. The newcomers certainly have some big shoes to fill, seeing as essentially every single previous cast member was either nominated or won in their respective categories. They all, including Anderson, have made their mark on The Crown, and audiences won't soon forget that.
