All 12 Seasons Of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ranked
Curb Your Enthusiasm has ended its run after 12 hilarious seasons, and some seasons of the Larry David sitcom were stronger than others.
“‘Long Ball Larry,’ That’s Your New Name.”
Season 6, Episode 7 - "The TiVo Guy"
One of the best parts of this friendship was how little sympathy or poise Leon often had for Larry in even the most embarrassing of situations.
Having Leon as Larry's friend in the show was one of the funniest aspects of the series. One of the best parts of this friendship was how little sympathy or poise Leon often had for Larry in even the most embarrassing of situations. This included the moment Larry got a new love interest on Curb Your Enthusiasm, which happened to be the beautiful and famous actor Lucy Lawless from Xena Warrior Princess fame.
However, before their first date, Larry injures his testicle. Worrying about what this meant, Larry visited the doctor with Leon coming along for . However, the only real thing Leon contributed is that he continuously comments on Larry's testicles. When the doctor agreed they are a bit more descended than the average testicles it only encouraged Leon more to point one that Larry has "long a** balls."
“I Went In That Room And Whited That S*** The F*** Up.”
Season 7, Episode 9 - "The Table Read"
Among Larry and Leon's many schemes on Curb Your Enthusiasm, this one was one of the most ridiculous. During the creation of the Seinfeld reunion on the show, Michael Richards became worried about having Groat's disease but Larry promised to get him in touch with his friend Danny Duberstein who has the disease to help reassure Michael. However, when Larry discovers Duberstein is dead, he has Leon pose as the man.
The only thing funnier than Larry coming up with this silly idea is how quickly Leon agreed to it. Leon is wildly enthusiastic about presenting himself in a "white" way that makes white people feel more comfortable. Leon is such an eccentric character that it is so much fun to see him embrace these strange ideas so readily and the fact that appealing to the anxious side of white people amuses him so much is hilarious.
“He’s Up There Moping, Man. Mopey D***.”
Season 6, Episode 10 - "The Bat Mitzvah"
Larry's divorce from Cheryl in Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of the biggest storylines that got so many funny moments out of it. The development was also pivotal in the relationship between Larry and Leon as they were able to grow closer as Larry was living as a single man with Leon in the house. However, Leon was not always happy with the way Larry was so sad following the breakup.
When Larry was up in his room and refusing to leave the house after being so depressed, Leon complained to Jeff that Larry was just moping around and coined the hilarious nickname "Mopey D***." However, it became even funnier when Jeff mentioned Moby Dick and Leon responded "Who the f*** is Moby Dick" showing that he wasn't even aware he was making a reference to the classic novel.
“You Get In That A**, Larry!”
Season 6, Episode 4 - "The Lefty Call"
JB Smoove quickly cemented himself as one of the funniest aspects of Curb Your Enthusiasm with his incredible performance as Leon. The HBO original series is known for being heavily improvised and while that could be daunting for some actors, Smoove seems to embrace it wholeheartedly with Leon going on long and hilarious rants at any given moment.
After Larry encountered a skinhead and let him get away with yelling slurs at him, he asked Leon for advice. Leon told him to “get in that ass.” What followed was Leon's outrageous and hilarious explanation of just what that means with him describing how Larry should not only "get in that ass" but also make a mess once he is in there and spray paint "Larry was here" on the inside of the ass. It is that kind of advice that makes Leon such a fresh addition to the show.
“A-Jack-A-Lit?”
Season 6, Episode 2 - "The Anonymous Donor"
In the first great scene between Larry and Leon, and perhaps still their greatest together, Larry confronted Leon about a certain stain that Cheryl found on his bedspread right after he moved in. It made for an awkward conversation between the two men that established them as very different people, but a comedic duo that is pitch-perfect for each other.
While Larry danced around the issue for a bit, he then sheepishly suggested the stain could be "ejaculate" to which Leon responded with this hilarious mispronunciation of the word. The bloopers for this moment are also some of the funniest in the show's history with David unable to contain himself with Smoove's delivery of "a-jack-a-lit." After this scene, it was not a surprise that Leon was made a central part of the show going forward.
“Topsy-turvy That Motherf*****.”
Season 6, Episode 6 - "The Rat Dog"
The show really leaned into the friendship between Larry and Leon even though it doesn't make a lot of sense on the surface. This includes the fact that, despite these two men being very different people and neither of them being entirely successful with their words of wisdom, they are always going to each other for advice on the various schemes and social scenarios they run into.
When Leon is going to a job interview, Larry decided to give him some advice about taking over the interview and started to ask questions himself. It was not the best piece of advice but it immediately made sense to Leon who agreed that he should switch it around on them or "topsy-turvy that mother f***er." It is moments like this that seem to suggest these two are actually soulmates given how quickly they can get on the same page.
“You Can’t Pause Toast, Larry. It Loses Its Essence!”
Season 6, Episode 6 - "The Rat Dog"
Leon has a philosophy that he strongly believes about a lot of different things. It is that kind of humor that guided both Seinfeld with Larry David clearly finding it very funny when people commit wholeheartedly to a personal view on a mundane and everyday thing, such as Leon with toast. In an episode revolving around the consequences of time delays caused by Larry’s slow toaster, Larry popped out Leon’s toast to make Cheryl some.
It is funny that he is so ionate about it.
Leon complained that he had a lot of time invested in his toast and it would be wasted if he stopped now. Larry explained that he could just pick up where he left off later on, but Leon didn't think you could just do that, because when you “pause toast,” the toast “loses its essence.” It is funny that he is so ionate about it, but it is even funnier that many people can likely see a lot of logic in what he's saying.
“Barack Obama, Motherf*****! I’m The President Of Hittin’ That A**!”
Season 6, Episode 6 - "The Rat Dog"
Some of the best episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm simply find Larry and Leon dealing with a very relatable situation made hilarious by their unique reactions to them. When Larry and Leon got their cell phones mixed up, they both did something by accident that screwed the other one over. Larry got called back about a job interview Leon did where he was offered the job and thought it was a telemarketer, so he turned them down.
Meanwhile, Leon offends]ed Larry’s black friend Hal, because Hal heard Leon saying, “Black man doin’ his thing, baby!” and spouting about Barack Obama, and assumed that it’s Larry doing a “black voice” to make fun of him. The mix-up is funny, but it is even funnier that Leon never for a moment questions who he is talking to or really considers what Hal is saying, instead choosing to go on this rant for no reason.
“I Brings The Ruckus To The Ladies.”
Season 7, Episode 5 - "Denise Handicapped"
He once confessed that he sleeps with women in Larry’s bed.
Over the course of his tenure as Larry David’s sidekick, audiences have seen that Leon Black is quite the ladies’ man. He once confessed that he sleeps with women in Larry’s bed, just because it’s bigger than his twin bed in the guest room. This makes him the perfect person for Larry to turn to for advice on dating, or simply to get unsolicited dating advice from.
It is always funny to see Larry struggling with the nuances of dating as well as his own insecurities that often turn into rage. This is perfectly juxtaposed to Leon who oozes confidence and is always boastful about his prowess with women. When Larry comes home from a date and is unsure about his performance in bed, Leon is skeptical that Larry did indeed "bring it" before making it very clear that he does not have such problems.
“I’m Going Upstairs To Eat This F***in’ Chinese Food In My F***in’ Room.”
Season 7, Episode 2 - Vehicular Fellatio
What made Leon such a great addition to Curb Your Enthusiasm is that he was initially there as a bit character only for JB Smoove to steal the show and fit perfectly into the series. Leon came on Curb Your Enthusiasm with his family when his sister Loretta was dating Larry. The entire family moved into Larry's house with Leon quickly and hilariously making himself at home.
Curb Your Enthusiasm is available to stream on Max.
However, after Loretta mistakenly thought that Larry cheated on her, she and the entire family left in anger, making Larry very happy. However, when Leon returned home with his Chinese food, Larry assumed that he would be leaving too only for Leon to go right back to his bedroom to enjoy his meal. It is a hilarious way of establishing that, despite having no reason to be there, Leon isn't going anywhere.
