With different types of weapons and attacks, there are multiple ways you can dispatch a disgruntled creature while delving deeper into the temple. Taking into the attack speed and arc of each weapon, there are many different ways you can play and progress in the game. Curse of the Dead Gods’ combat mechanics will keep you on your toes, and this guide will give you the tools to fight back.

Stamina in Curse of the Dead Gods

You will need to pay close attention to your stamina bar as you fight enemies. Simply dodging over and over is ineffective, and some weapons take up more stamina to use than others. Ranged weapons tend to take up the most stamina.

Your stamina will replenish over time, but you can also earn stamina. Good timing, combos, and victories will restore your stamina faster. This will help you keep your momentum up and continue on through the game.

Combat Patterns in Curse of the Dead Gods

Enemies generally have clear attack patterns. This will give you openings for combos to build up your stamina. A red flash will indicate that your enemy is attacking. Similar to the Dark Souls games, you might have to take the defensive approach while you identify your enemy’s pattern, and then let all Hell break loose on them.

Add parrying into your own pattern to throw off your enemies. If you see a red flash, parry the attack to stagger your opponent. Depending on the size of your arc, parrying a targeted enemy can interrupt other nearby ones. Your attack animations are smooth enough that if you need to slip a parry in during an emergency, it shouldn’t be too difficult.

Weapon Types in Curse of the Dead Gods

You will be given access to both ranged and melee weapons, mapped to separate buttons so that you can switch between them. Use a melee attack on a nearby enemy and then switch to a ranged attack on an approaching one to make it quicker and easier to take out enemies and move through the rooms. You can also use a ranged weapon such as a pistol to set off an explosive barrel near a group of enemies to deal some damage.

Corruption Level in Curse of the Dead Gods

Another form of damage in Curse of the Dead Gods is Corruption. As you progress through the rooms, your Corruption level will rise until you are cursed with one of fourteen curses. When you are cursed, your Corruption level will restart at zero.

To prevent this, avoid enemy attacks that deal Corruption damage, only heal at a shrine when necessary, and only trade gold for certain items. All of those activities will raise your Corruption level. Stay out of the dark as well, as it will speed up the Corruption process. Corruption curses can make traps set themselves off, make collecting gold raise your Corruption level, and make corpses dangerous to touch.

Now that you’re prepared, you will be a worthy opponent. Use your weapons wisely, keep your stamina up, and most importantly: don’t go into the dark.
