Frank Miller appears in a cameo role in The Umbrella Academy, and now Cursed.
It's not uncommon for these adaptations to feature cameos, usually from writers and artists, occasionally from editorial staff. The late, great playing a Watcher's Informant who traveled through time and space, watching key events as they unfold. But while Lee is the most famous for his cameos, he is far from unique in this regard. Miller has appeared in six films, always in small cameo roles, and dying in each.
Miller also has a cameo in Cursed, which is based on a novel by himself and writer Thomas Wheeler. Miller appears in Cursed season 1, episode 3, in which he plays a member of the Red Paladins called Brother Horde. This is a wonderfully tense episode, with Nimue attempted to keep her head down in a monastery that has been occupied by the Red Paladins, who are on the hunt for her. Brother Horde is one of the Paladins present at the meeting that Nimue infiltrates. After Father Carden presents his plans to wipe out the Fey, Miller's character asks, "But what about Merlin? He's still the head of the snake."
Cursed is a typical Frank Miller project, with an intense focus on a powerful female protagonist - in this case Nimue, the woman destined to become the Lady of the Lake, played by The Sword in the Stone when he was just a child. Miller drew eight color and 30 black and white images for the book, which released in 2019.
The partnership between Miller and Wheeler had only just begun when Netflix approached Miller with the idea of collaborating on a project. As a result, the Netflix series - which Miller described as a "companion" to the book - was actually produced at the same time. He found the experience enjoyable, because he and Wheeler were conducting the necessary research for both at the same time, and they were able to identify different ways to use it for the two different storytelling formats.
