Netflix's fantasy series Cursed, from Thomas Wheeler and Frank Miller, is a "what if?" take on classic Arthurian legends that puts the Sword of Power in the hands of Nimue, a young Fey woman, instead of King Arthur. The season 1 finale leaves many things unresolved, so here's what we know so far about season 2's renewal status, its possible release date, and how the story might continue.

Cursed stars Katherine Langford in the lead role as Nimue, who is feared by her fellow Sky Folk because of a demonic curse that she supposedly carries in her blood. The Fey will soon have to turn to her as their only hope, however, as the Red Paladins are sweeping through the country, burning and executing any Fey that they come across. Meanwhile, Uther Pendragon's seat on the throne of England is threatened by the arrival of a Viking king who wants to challenge his claim - and drunken court magician Merlin isn't being much help.

In the vacuum left after the end of The Witcher releasing earlier this year. Cursed is a similarly ambitious show, so here's what we know so far about its future.

Cursed Hasn't Been Renewed For Season 2 Yet

Cursed Pym and Nimue

Cursed hasn't yet been renewed for season 2 by Netflix. This is standard for Netflix shows, where renewal decisions are typically made several weeks after the current season's release, in order for the streaming service to gauge viewing numbers and audience interest. The show is already popular, ranking in the #2 spot on Netflix in its first weekend of release, so expect to hear some good news regarding Cursed season 2 by the end of September 2020.

Cursed Season 2 Release Date

Cursed Arthur With Sword

Given the many different locations and the scale of the production, Cursed season 2 can be expected to have a slightly longer turnaround than other Netflix shows. Season 2's release date may also be impacted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has led to film and TV productions being shut down around the world. Cursed season 1 was filmed in the UK, where restrictions have been lifted and some productions have resumed shooting, so it's possible that the show may not be affected. At this early stage, a late 2021 or early 2022 release for Cursed season 2 looks likely.

Cursed Season 2 Story Details

Cursed The Weeping Monk

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Cursed season 1.

Cursed's season 1 finale goes out with a bang. Nimue is shot by Iris and falls off a waterfall, apparently dead. Merlin, enraged by this, reclaims the Sword of Power for himself and recovers his immense magical powers. The Weeping Monk turns his back on the Red Paladins and reveals to Squirrel that his name is actually Lancelot. Meanwhile, Arthur forges a new alliance with The Red Spear after her Viking rival, Cumber the Ice King, sends his soldiers to ambush the Fey who are trying to escape.

In Arthurian legends, Nimue is the name of a character better known as the Lady of the Lake, who famously hands the sword Excalibur to Arthur. Nimue being shot with arrows and falling into the water could be setting her up to become the ethereal Lady of the Lake, but it seems unlikely that Cursed would return to traditional canon when the show's purpose is to tell a different story. Moreover, while Nimue was shot twice by Sister Iris, she could feasibly recover from her wounds - especially with the help of magic. In Cursed season 2, Nimue will most likely emerge from the water to reclaim the Sword of Power for herself - with "Lady of the Lake" perhaps ing "The Wolf-Blood Witch" and "The Fey Queen" as one of her titles.
