The CW adds a new scripted series, Sullivan's Crossing, to its fall slate despite its recent downsizing of scripted TV shows. The CW has been undergoing significant changes since Nexstar Media closed a deal in late 2022 to acquire 75% ownership of the network. Nexstar wants to take the network in a new direction and focus on broadening the age range of its target audience while utilizing cheaper original series. This followed many scripted shows being canceled and many more currently facing stalled renewals.
As reported by THR, The CW is partnering with Canadian network CTV and Fremantle to bring Sullivan's Crossing to its fall slate. The family drama, which features past CW stars Chad Michael Murray and Scott Patterson, is currently airing on CTV and is based on works by Virgin River author Robyn Carr. Because it is an acquired series, it aligns with the network's cost-cutting measures and assures viewers that at least one more scripted series will hit The CW in the fall. Check out the statement from CW president of entertainment, Brad Schwartz, below:
Sullivan’s Crossing is an emotionally rich, authentic family drama that will immediately resonate with audiences thanks to an incredible cast and relatable themes of self-reflection, second chances and the power of community. Alongside a breakout performance from Morgan Kohan, it is incredibly special to bring Chad and Scott back home to The CW.
What Does The CW's Future Look Like?
So far, The CW's 2023-2024 slate is looking a bit sparse. While Sullivan's Crossing adds a new scripted series to the network's lineup, few other titles are expected to it. The CW has several shows currently airing, but the majority likely won't be renewed. The only current scripted series on The CW that has been renewed for the TV season is All American, which was renewed for season 6 under Nexstar.
Reports suggest the total number of original scripted series on the network next season could be as low as three. Initially, there were to be 11 scripted series for The CW's 2023-2024 slate, but the number allegedly was narrowed. These reports have not yet been confirmed by The CW and Nexstar but, if true, it means that titles such as The Winchesters, Walker: Independence, and Superman & Lois will all be contending for limited space on the slate. This comes after many Arrowverse shows were already canceled in 2022, and as The Flash, Riverdale, and Nancy Drew finish their runs.
News of the Sullivan's Crossing acquisition ahead of the renewal of any current scripted TV shows on The CW demonstrates that the network is prioritizing importing and acquiring low-cost scripted content. It also proves that the network has a method for beefing up its schedule even amid these cancelations and delayed renewals. While this announcement promises new scripted content for viewers, it also further raises concern for The CW's current shows, which may no longer be needed with the network finding unique ways to introduce scripted content.
