Who Could Khary Payton Play In The DCU

Cyborg Is Not The Only DC Role For The Actor

Khary Payton as Ezekiel on The Walking Dead

Payton has previous experience with other DC characters besides Cyborg, and some of them would suit the actor for a live-action role in the DCU. With multiple DCEU actors likely getting recast for the DCU, as was Henry Cavill as Superman, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II could be out as Black Manta. With rumors that Jason Momoa will trade his Aquaman role for Lobo in the DCU, it would make little sense to keep the same actor as his villain, and Payton could bring a frightening Black Manta to life in the DCU.

While Payton has voiced Black Manta and other villain roles before, the actor's live-action stint in The Walking Dead sets him up perfectly for a DCU hero. The zombie series saw Payton portray King Ezekiel, a charismatic and optimistic leader who had to deal with dark events throughout the series. Payton showed he has great leadership qualities and can play intelligent characters well, making him a great fit for the DCU's Black Lightning.

Payton has the acting range to play both lighter and darker characters. With the DCU still having to cast — or recast — several characters who will play important roles in the universe, having a talented actor who knows the franchise inside out is perfect, especially since DCU stars will play their roles in live-action, animation, and video games. While Cyborg might be out of reach, Payton could play heroes and villains like Steel, Deadshot, Martian Manhunter, and more in the DCU, using his Cyborg experience for DC's benefit.
