At the end of issue #5, Damian names his successor after he and his father, with help from his mother Talia al Ghul, defeat Ra’s al Ghul. In a poignant conversation with Batman, Damian reflects on their family feud, realizing that the world is on a downward trajectory and that fighting its evils alone is nearly impossible. He acknowledges the importance of the Bat-Family, saying, “Gotham needs a Batman, and Batman needs a Robin. But I suspect Gotham needs a Robin too. More than one.” It’s at this moment that readers understand Damian’s intention to expand the Robin mantle to others, ultimately declaring his successors.

However, the series doesn’t settle for an “everyone is Robin” conclusion. Ba introduces one of Damian’s successors, who also happens to be the first character introduced in issue #1. This unnamed child has a personal connection to Damian, making her assumption of the Child Wonder mantle all the more meaningful—she is the daughter of a criminal Damian killed. Throughout the series, Damian has been haunted by the memory of the man he beheaded, and now, the revelation that his daughter will become the new Robin adds a deeply personal and redemptive layer to the ing of the mantle.

Damian Wayne Redefines the Robin Legacy by Creating the 'Robin Network'

By ing on the Robin legacy to dozens of others, including a child directly affected by one of his mistakes, Damian has redefined what it means to be Robin. He also takes this redefinition further by essentially creating a Robin Network. As Damian explains, he and the Robins represent “a union of people trying to help their community make sense of the system they’re in.” This network provides , resources, jobs, and food, helping people meet their needs without resorting to crime or falling victim to predatory corporations.

By establishing this network under the Robin name, Damian has transformed the mantle into something that has a far greater impact on the Gotham community. This is a feat no other Robin—be it Dick, Jason, or Tim—has accomplished, as their legacies were typically focused on individual heroics. In contrast, Damian’s approach turns the Robin legacy into a symbol of community and empowerment. Thus, one could argue that if this story were set in mainstream continuity, Damian’s version of Robin would leave the most significant and positive impact on Gotham.

The Boy Wonder's Ending Reflects the Core Idea of We Are Robin

Damian's Robin Network Is Superior to the We Are Robin Movement for 1 Key Reason

The revelation that Damian ed on the Robin mantle to multiple people echoes the storyline of We Are Robin (2015-). In this narrative, We Are Robin is a youth movement that emerges in Gotham City following Batman's apparent death during the events of Joker's Endgame. With Gotham in chaos, the city’s youth adopt the Robin insignia and form a vigilante army to fight for their home. This movement is also notable for the induction of Bat-Family member Duke Thomas as an honorary Robin.

While both movements share similarities, they also differ significantly. For one, the Robin Network is established by an official Boy Wonder, whereas the We Are Robin movement operates outside the purview of the Bat-Family. Furthermore, Damian’s network represents much more than just a vigilante army; it focuses on helping the community by addressing the root problems of the city—such as poverty and a lack of resources—rather than merely tackling the symptoms, like crime. Additionally, the Robin Network is designed as a sustainable and expandable solution, in contrast to the short-lived and often problematic We Are Robin movement.

We Are Robin and The Boy Wonder Are Establishing a Pattern Fans Can't Unsee

Damian's Successor in Mainstream Continuity May Actually Be The People of Gotham (Eventually)

The Boy Wonder #5 Damian and Robins

Damian’s announcement of his successors—the people of Gotham—and the creation of the Robin Network lie outside mainstream continuity. However, Ba’s The Boy Wonder still offers valuable insight into who the next Robin could be. With both We Are Robin and The Boy Wonder showcasing Gotham’s youth rising to claim the mantle, it seems increasingly likely that this direction is one DC might pursue when Damian eventually steps down. Just because this Black Label series isn’t part of the main continuity doesn’t mean fans won’t see some of its ideas and developments incorporated into DC canon in the future. Thus, DC's next Robin could be more of a movement than a single individual.
