Now that The Righteous Gemstones is over, it's clear that ending of The Righteous Gemstones season 4, it's not clear what McBride's next show will be, or when it will be ready to watch on streaming. It will likely be just as funny as McBride ever is, but there's still quite a bit of uncertainty surrounding his next project.
Part of the reason it's so hard to predict what McBride will do next is because his past projects have been so different to one another. Eastbound & Down was about a washed-up baseball player, Vice Principals was about two narcissistic school s, and The Righteous Gemstones was about a dysfunctional family of megachurch preachers. It seems like McBride can make a hilarious comedy show out of pretty much anything he wants, but after The Righteous Gemstones and Vice Principals, it's clear that he needs to bring two things back in his next show. If he doesn't, it would be a big missed opportunity.
Danny McBride’s Next Show Needs To Have Characters For Walton Goggins & Edi Patterson
Goggins & Patterson Are Absolutely Perfect For McBride's Brand Of Humor
One of the few things that was consistent between Vice Principals and The Righteous Gemstones - aside from McBride himself - was Walton Goggins and Edi Patterson. Goggins played Lee in Vice Principals and Baby Billy in The Righteous Gemstones, while Patterson played Ms. Abbott and Judy, respectively. Both Goggins and Patterson are absolutely great in McBride's comedy shows, and it would be a real shame if they're not in his fourth HBO series. There are very few actors out there who understand the comedic timing, delivery, and the sheer commitment to the bit as well as Goggins and Patterson do, and they'd be a big advantage in his next show.
I, for one, can't think of anyone else in Hollywood who would be capable of delivering lines like "Go outside, nerd!" or "I'm gonna shave my p---y and move to Malibu" as well as Goggins and Patterson can. Goggins and Patterson elevated The Righteous Gemstones and Vice Principals into absolute classics, and McBride's next show just won't be as good without them. Additionally, while Walton Goggins' star power and friendship with McBride make him seem like almost a shoo-in for the next series, Patterson is just as good and deserves a new character just as much as he does.
What Will Danny McBride's Next HBO Show Be?
McBride May Be Adapting The Southern Book Club's Guide To Slaying Vampires
Though nothing is confirmed yet, we do have a few ideas of what Danny McBride's next HBO show could be. In 2024, McBride said he would work on a TV adaptation of "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires," which would give him a chance to blend comedy with horror (via Movie Web). It's not entirely clear if that's still his plans for his next TV show, as there hasn't been much news about the project in almost a year, but it is possible. McBride has also worked in horror before, and "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" could be something of a ion project for him.

10 Best Righteous Gemstones Episodes, Ranked
HBO's celebrated comedy series The Righteous Gemstones has provided many laughs and memorable moments since it premiered in 2019.
Even that, however, isn't a given. After the ending of The Righteous Gemstones, McBride said he wanted to take some time off and be "a cool dad" to his two children (via live traveling revival of The Righteous Gemstones, which may take precedence for the next few years. On top of it all, McBride has met most questions about what comes next with ambiguity, so he's clearly playing his cards close to his chest.

Danny McBride & Walton Goggins' 9-Year-Old HBO Show Is So Much Harder To Watch After The Righteous Gemstones For 1 Weird Reason
The dynamic between Edi Patterson, Danny McBride, and Walton Goggins' Vice Principals characters is jarring to watch after The Righteous Gemstones.
If McBride doesn't adapt "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" next, there's still a few things that we can expect from his next show. All of McBride's HBO shows have a few things in common, like their Southern settings and sarcastic, absurd humor. McBride's next show will likely take place somewhere in the South, and it will likely follow a cast of characters who are hilariously ill-equipped for whatever situation they're in. Whether that's fighting vampires or running a megachurch, Danny McBride will almost certainly make it outrageously funny.
