After more than 15 years, Danny Phantom and his friends are back in Gabriela Epstein’s Danny Phantom: A Glitch in Time. This graphic novel picks up shortly after the cartoon series finale/TV movie, 'Phantom Planet,' where Danny is a public figure beloved by the now "ghost-proof" city of Amity Park.

When Dark Danny, aka Phantom, returns, Danny needs a power source to win the day. His search leads him and his friends to ancient ruins containing untold truths about the Ghost Zone. Tucker uses his translator to decode the ancient writings that reveal how the human and spirit worlds were once united. But a planet-shattering war divided the two worlds, leading to the spirit world becoming the Ghost Zone. The translation continues by saying all of humanity’s energy, including emotion, has a connection with the spirit world. With the two worlds divided, all of existence is doomed to fail. In a huge reveal, Danny, Sam, and Tucker realize the ghosts they’ve been fighting for years were in fact born from emotion.

Danny Phantom's Ghosts are Born from Emotion

Ever since Jazz Fenton, Danny’s older sister, discovered her little brother’s ghost secret, she has been obsessed with helping Danny understand the Ghost Zone. She came up with the theory that ghosts could be manifestations of emotions, and now that truth is confirmed. Danny goes on to explain that his most memorable opponents were all born from an intense emotion. Ember McLain craved love from her fans, Desiree used her wishes to bring happiness, and Youngblood had a desire to stay forever young. Even Phantom was born out of fear and sadness after he lost his family and humanity in his timeline. But now the truth behind the Ghost Zone is revealed, Danny has a new mission.

Danny Phantom Will Unite the Human and Spirit Worlds

Danny has learned much from his time as a supernatural superhero. But even now that he understands where ghosts come from, it remains a problem that the human world fears spirits. The Spirit and Human worlds are both natural, and they're indelibly connected - as long as humans have intense emotions, villainous ghosts will be produced. While Danny has always been effective at protecting humanity, he'll need to become something more to heal this rift.

Danny plans to take full responsibility by being the half-ghost to build a bridge between both worlds, giving him new purpose as a hero. Danny wants to find a way to have ghosts and humans co-exist in one world like in ancient times. His mission may take the rest of his life, but Danny Phantom has achieved the impossible more times than anyone.
